Cindy Sheehan and other celebrities are fasting to protest the US occupation of Iraq, demanding that the troops be brought home.

    Here's a letter from Cindy:

    Dear Friends,

GSFP and Code Pink are sponsoring a hunger strike for peace which begins July 04, called Troops Home Fast Some of us like Dick Gregory and Diane Wilson will be fasting until the troops come home from Iraq, and some, like me, will be fasting for a specified time. My fast will begin on 7/04 and end on the last day of Camp Casey: 09/02.

We are announcing the fast from Washington, DC on 07/04 and having our last supper on 07/03 in Lafayette Park.

If you can join us in DC on the 3rd and 4th, or fast in solidarity with us on that day, or any other time, please let me know.

Also, Jodie Evans is throwing me a birthday party at Bus Boys and poets on the 3rd of July from 9pm to 11pm....our last food will be before midnight that day....please come to my party, if you can!!!

    Love and peace soon,
    Cindy

Good luck with all that, but you know how the mainstream media works, they will have a 2 minute segment on this and forget it, so in the end is it worth it? Also, I hope Cindy is very careful with how she does this, fasting for that long can be VERY dangerous.

I've really tried, but just cannot understand hunger strikes. A lack of nourishment makes one weaker, and less able to deal with adversity and opposition. I admire her efforts, and I'm obviously not in her shoes, and will refrain from outright judgment. But I just don't understand that particular protest tactic... it just seems to play only into the hands of one's opponents.

I would admire her much more if she... I dunno... maybe if she took up martial arts fulltime as an alternative.

Fasting as a protest attracts attention, which is why people do it.
To call attention to whatever their cause is.
Dick Gregory is like a professional faster. He does it a coupla a times year, or used to, for a variety of causes.
And yes, avoiding solid food for 2 months could be considered extreme, but everything you need to live just fine can be taken in liquid form, which happens to anyone who gets their jaw broken--it's wired shut for a couple of months.

Hunger strikes will just leave you hungry. Political America, more likely than not, wont care. If it did, Why are there so many starving people on the streets? It barely focuses on that, why the hell would it focus on someone who's willing to do that? They may write about it, but more likely than not, they wont care.

its kinda funny that celebrities are going on a hunger strike.

I see celebs do it all the time, such as paris hilton, nicole richie, the ohlsen twins, and lindsey lohan, to name a few........

never fast. it leaves you weak in a time when you need strength. i suspect this has been a suggestion made to cindy by a fifth column that has infiltrated her group. cindy should start watching her step otherwise she'll have a car "accident" or suddenly contract cancer.

It seems to me that it would cause more panic in the government if people over-ate instead of fasting.

The Federales would just see fasting as a way to lower American obesity and encourage it.

I say that everyone should fatten up!

Sometimes a personal "ritual" of sorts can be constructive, even if you don't take it seriously in a religious sort of way. When traveling long distances by car, my "ritual" was to listen to one particular recording of "Cold Rain & Snow." Years later Zappa's "Peaches en Regalia" was the start of every night shift. Practicing card sleights has become practically a meditation form to me. Other people I know may burn a candle or stuff like that. Smudge sticks and stuff can be an odd take on introspection, it seems to me.

My wife was once burning a candle, knowing a friend was in crisis. She didn't often do this. So I asked her if she thought it might actually affect things, wondering what she really thought it could do. "I have to keep an eye on it. I don't forget my friend's problems. And maybe, in that reminder, I'll think of something I can actually DO to help."

Personally I'd be thinking a lot if hungry, but probably not about how to feed other hungry people! But I can certainly understand it from a "focus inward" point of view. As a public relations move, but I'm not sure that it's effective, but it would be hard to really prove one way or the other.
