Every month I get a horrible backache that persists for about 10 days straight in my right shoulder blade area. Sometimes it keeps me up at night. I've had my boy give me a massage in that area and it helps temporarily, but then the pain returns a few hours later. This has been going on for over a year now.

Does anyone know what could be causing this?

is the pain over the spine area at the shoulder blade level, or to the side- above, around, under the actual shoulder blade?
Was there any accident or activity that you remember preceding the pain?
If the pain is around the shoulder blade, the most likely problem is muscle spasms, although there could be some nerve impingement, but less likely. If you had an injury, there could be some damage to the rotator cuff, but that pain doesnt come and go, it stays. There is also a possiblity of carpal tunnel syndrome, but you would have pain in the arm from the wrist to elbow.

If your pain is middle of the back and upper middle, there are several things that could cause that. The ones that come to mind immediately are gastric reflux and gall bladder problem.

Lots of women with large breasts have chronic upper back and shoulder pain.

Does it happen at the same time every month? It could be menstruation related. I get backaches with my period. Also, the bed you are sleeping on makes a difference. We got a new mattress for our waterbed and filled it better, and a lot of my backaches got a lot better.

if you go to your doctor, local yoga class or a specialist in geriatrics you will be able to pick up some info on stretching exercises. going to the doctor will eliminate anything more serious. my feeling is that you have done what i have done in the past, pulled a muscle in the back from pushing or pulling something too heavy. if you lift something use your legs, not your back, if you don't lift stuff properly you will have an ongoing problem.

Thanks for the advice guys, I think I did pull a muscle but I don't know when it could have happened. I do a little bit of yogo and that provides some relief. It doesn't happen at the same time every month, kinda varies. And the pain is also above and on the side and even on the shoulder blade. I may go to the doc sometime. . .I just hate going.

I have back problems... I've always pinpointed it to a point back when I was about 14 when I hit a tree hard with my back whilst on a rope swing type thing... Ever since then I get bad lower back pains and spasms... They've become less frequent with time but they're still there... I've always wondered about getting a scan or something but was always in the "maybe I dont want to know" frame of mind..
