i have planted 3 different strains to try to get 3 mother plants for cloning. my question is ,is there any way to tell who in my garden is a male other than growing the seed to a size where i can cut a couple of clones and then root them and then trip them to see who is who?
You can't tell a plants sex untill it flowers. Some plants can show pre flowers after the sixth internode but these pre flowers can easily be mistaken for the wrong sex. Males tend to grow taller. But this alone is not definite proof.
Quickest.....first two weeks after sprouting,.... 24hrs continuous light. After that turn to 12/12...in about a week the males will show.... within two weeks the females. Its important to look very closely for the little white hairs ...first ones will be arround the 8th iternod in the axil (the place the leaf meets the stem) ,between the little spikey lookin thing and the leaf, ther will only be one "flower" with little white 'hairs" coming out of it,....the males will just look like a small artchoke,or brussel sprout, or something, no hairs! As soon as you can identify the hairs immediatly put that plant back on 24 or whatever your veg cycle is,...if you leave it too long on 12/12 when you do turn the lights up it will "rejuvanate" and the plant will go back to growing 1 lobed leaves ,the the hole plant acts like a seedling....wont hurt any thing but you lose a lot of time that could have been veg time! On the other hand you get a shit load of cutting material when this happens! You can also just keep budding them for a quicky harvest!
Here's the best way: Let's say it's Jan 1. Plant some seeds under 24/0 light. Grow them for 1 month, to Feb 1. Take clones off each plant, carefully labeled what came from who. Root the clones which takes 2 weeks. Then set the clones under 12/12 light for 2 weeks by which time they will have expressed sex. Now it's March 1 and you know what is what.
