Of being a vegetarian if you wear leather, fur, or other cloths made out of animals? My neighbor claims to be a vegetarian but continues to wear leather shoes and has a couple fur coats...WTF?!?
Yeah it doesn't make much sense. Unless of course they had those items for their pre veggie days and are going to get the wear out of the item then replace it with a vegan alternative. Waste not want not.
Also: not everyone is a veggie for the sake of saving animals. A lot of them just are because they can't stand the taste of meat, are disgusted by it, or never wanna feel like they're eating a corpse.
hmmmm,.. I'm not sure what to think, ask her about it. Just be all, "does wearing them count as killing them? cuz in my book it does." Who knows maybe she has an explaination for it, (which has gotta be good.) Sage is right though, for me I has 2 pre-vege items, (from inbetween my advisory from the doctor.) meat is gross to me thou. I can't stand it!
they're hypocrits if they advocate vegetarianism and wear leather i'm being attacked at this thread for advocating people not to wear leather http://hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20425
I know it seems ridiculous, but maybe she is unaware of the cruelty in the fur industry. It could be possible that she believes factory farms are cruel but fur animals somehow have a happy life. I know I have heard many head-shakingly dense comments about fur, including "they don't kill those animals, they shear them like sheep." and "well, can't they just wait until the animal dies of old age?" For some people, the death involved in fur isn't as obvious as that in a bloody steak. It is also possible that she doesn't like the coats, but is unsure what to do with them. Unwanted furs can be given to wildlife rehabilitation centers for use as bedding for orphaned baby animals.
That is all horrible and true, but there is also cruelty in the non-factory farm dairy produces. The US dairy farmers disgusts me. They have a monopoly on the dairy industry and the beef industry. It's horrible how our country not only is cruel ot animals, but puts other countries out of business just because there productions are pumped for of steroids and hormones. Yuck,....
I don't wear fur or leather clothes, but it's just so hard to get nice no-leather shoes, almost impossible! (Although I haven't bought any new shoes since I went veggie and walk barefoot a lot, but still...)
I still have some non-vegetarian items from before I went veg a while ago. I still use them because as well as being pro-animal, I'm also pro-Earth. I don't want to waste any more than I have to. That just means that in the future, I won't buy those dreaded products. I did get rid of some things that I really did not want to wear, by donating them to Goodwill.
If most animals are killed for food, using leather (from food animals) for clothing does not increase the amount of animal death. I don't know if the premise is true or not, but your bud may be thinking something like that.
There may be some basis of truth in that, but the leather industy is seperate from the slaughterhouses and just as brutal. I'm not suppourting eithier because cows shouldn't die in the first place. Whether their corpses prove doubly useful is no consolation. I've not really had a problem with that. PM me if you like and I'll share the secrets
Hmm, I'm not a vegetarian, but I dont really like the idea of fur.... I do have a long red leather coat .. but.. I bought it from a thrift store and its dated circa 1967ish or more... so ... I see it as recycling... I know you guys wont but... what if it just got thrown away... yes waste not want not...
Have you asked him if he is a vegetarian for ethical or dietary resons? That may answer it. Maybe they are old and they are too expensive to get rid of.
One of the main things that suck about owning or being given leather when your a veg/vegan, is that you can't really give it away because that promotes the use of animal hide/fur. At least that is what I think. What do the rest of you think?
Also. I just had a thought to add,....that there are more than one type of vegetarian, so maybe in her mind there is a difference between using an animal for food and for clothing. Hmmmm,....
probably because she isnt a vegie who did it for ethical reasons... i know far more veggies who are veggies because they dont like meat, or they get sick from it and not because they think its more ethical...
