To refer to God as "the God of abraham" is ironic in a way; Judiaism began when Abraham rejected the Sumarian pantheon and adopted the belief in one Universal God. To call God "the God of Abraham" implies that there are more than one, which contradicts what Abraham himself believed. Saying "that's the one she prayed to" also implies the existence of more than one God. LOL! If it seems like you're being ignored it's probably just because most of the posts in here (my own included) are motivated by ego (everybodies either attacking or defending their opinions). In an atmosphere like that the more offensive people tend to get the most attention. You still haven't answered the original question though, "Why do you believe the bible is the word of God"? Or like I said "I understand your belief in God, but how did you come to believe that the bible is his word"?
Who's talking about the Book of Daniel? I have clearly stated Ezekiel. The abomination of desolation has nothing to do with the empire emblem erected at the entrance to the temple, because the prophecy was written around the time of the destruction of the second temple. And at no time did all the people of the earth have to have a mark on their forhead or right hand which would give them the right to buy and sell. Also the first beast or person who was fatally wounded came back to life. Another words this leader would have to come back from the dead. Attempts have been made to force fit events of the past into the prophecy, but these events have not fulfilled the prophecy. The only ones who embrace this belief are those who want to believe the prophecies were not fulfilled which would make the Bible null and void. So they try and fit a few simular events from history in there, and then say well that all happen in the past. The problem is, most of the prophecy remains unfulfilled, and that is why these weak attempts to state that the prophecy is untrue simply does not fly. This is what the Jews did when Christ came. They wanted a King to toss the Romans out. They ignored the prophecy which stated that their King would be a man of sorrows. So they did what you are doing, they simply ignored that prophecy, and picked the prophecy which stated he would be a Mighty King. This kind of game playing with prophecy will only lead you in the wrong direction everytime. If the Jews had considered all the prophecies of His coming, they would of found that all three hundred of the prophecies were fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ. Today most Jews have little faith in any God, and this is because they have not followed the prophecies. The Bible clearly states that the Jews who were Gods people would become a lost people, where as the Gentiles would imbrace Christ, and that is why we have over a billion people today who follow a Jew named Jesus. God points out that the Jews would wander the earth and be a persucuted people until the time of the end, and then God would return them to the land of Israel.
NaykidApe, this is a good question and a crucial one. Let me ask two questions. Do you think people that commit moral crimes ought to be punished? And secondly, do you, have you, ever committed any moral crimes? I can say that I have and if you're honest with yourself i think you know that you have as well. Do you value justice? Justice, as we know, is people who are guilty getting punished in an appropriate way to their guilt. People who are guilty pay for their crimes unless they have been pardoned. The punishment we face for moral crimes is Hell. A just and good God is not going to let a guilty person go free and not punish him. That wouldn't be just. This is the bad news. We are all sinners and we are all guilty before God. This is where Jesus comes in to the picture. Jesus Christ is the only way to God because he is the only one who has solved this problem. God sent His Son, Jesus Christ to die on a cross for our sins. He is our pardon. He took our place, he was our substitute. The Bible says God did this because he loves us and wants to restore a right relationship with us. You personally. He calls all of us to receive this pardon so that we will not have to be punished. He has made this way for us to be forgiven.
I appreciate that you took the time to answer my question JLMPGHRS, but I don't think you quite understood what I was asking. I understand the idea of repentence, the need for forgiveness, etc. But what I was asking is; what makes you personally think you need a third party to intercede on your behalf, why do you believe this. Put it this way; if you offend someone, is it necassary to recruit an outside party to go and make amends for you? Pslams says "I have offended noone but you Lord". Proverbs says " Come let us reason together sayth the Lord. though your sins be as scarlett I will make them white as snow". What I'm really asking is; how did you personally come to the belief that you need someone to intercede for you?
JMPLGHRS and I were. You interrupted with your offtopic comment about the scrolls (go back to post 76 in this thread). No, the abomination of desolation first showed up in Daniel. If you really read the gospels (where Jesus quotes Daniel by name) you would know that. You're all over the place here; you say "I clearly stated Ezeckiel" (in a conversation about Daniel) then you go on to quote revelations? WTF? In other words, you're trying to prove that the prophecies in Daniel weren't already fullfilled by the time Daniel was written by showing that the prophecies in ezekiel and Revelations haven't been fullfilled yet? No, I ignore your interpretations of the "prophecies" because in order to make them fit your belief you have to do what you've been doing throughout this thread; Take a line (out of context) from this book, add it to a line (out of context) from that book, string them together and try to pass it off as one cohesive statement in order to make it say what you want it to say. What you wind up with is a cut-and-paste version of the bible that bears little or no resemblence to the actual text. Even someone who wasn't versed in the bible could see that this is your MO just by looking at how you respond to the posts in here. What the hell are you basing this last statement on? Another prophecy after the fact; by the time the gospels were written (even if you ascribe an early date of authorship) the christian church was already comprised mostly of none jews. A billion? they must be in hiding then. I've met thousands of people who call themselves "christians" but I've only met a handfull of people who actually follow what he said.
Because there is no way I can make myself right before God. There is nothing that I can do on my own to take away my guilt. When I stand before God I know that I'm going to be guilty. Even if I do good things, and i do do good things, I know it's not going to take away my sin. The good things don't even up the record. Justice will be served. When I look at my heart, honestly, i know it's wicked. By comparison I may look better than the hardcore criminal or serial killer, but God's standards are higher that ours. i know i will never measure up to God's requirements. Sin can not dwell in the prescence of God. Think of our standards for human judges. they're just if they punish the guilty for their crime. if they didn't, justice would not be served. God is more righteous than a human judge. he is just and can't be bribed or persuaded into letting a crime go unpunished. that would be injustice. Everyone owes God. Some a little, some a lot. but everyone owes God for the sin they've committed. So what can I do? Live in dread of the day i have to stand before God and give an account for all the evil i have done. However, God has made a way for my debt to be payed through His Son Jesus Christ. God has made this offer of forgiveness to us through Jesus and it goes out to everyone. Jesus Christ is the only way to forgiveness because only He has atoned for our sins. I don't want to be punished for the things i know i've done. i don't want to get what i deserve. i want to experience a pardon. That's why I have accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Lord and Savior. I chose to accept the free gift of forgiveness that he extended to me. As the sinful human being that I am, I can't approach a holy, perfect God by myself and expect to be forgiven. This is why the man Jesus Christ, God in human flesh, is the one mediator between God and man. We can only have our slate wiped clean through him.To put it another way, we have a deadly disease. The disease is sin. The antidote to this deadly disease is available for each and every person. It's up to us to accept it or not. If we don't, we perish, not because of God but because of us. If we do accept it, we don't perish, we live forever, not because of us but because of God and His mercy.
I'm aware that Daniel speaks of the abomination of desolation, and what Jesus said of it. My comment about the scrolls was made to establish the prophetic nature of the Bible and to verify its truth. Since it is prophecy we are talking about, I felt that comment was not off topic. I am not all over the place when it comes to prophecy. The problem is unless you take all the prophecies together you will not have the overview entended by the scriptures. If you are like some Christians who only look at the New Testament prophecies about Babylon you will only walk away with half the story. Unless you look at the prophecies of Babylon found in both the Old and New testaments you will only have, half of the truth. It is you who are mistaken in the belief that you can understand the Bibles full truth by ignoring the rest of its prophecies. The Bibles message for the future cannot be understood a line at a time. The Jews made the same mistake you are making. Its not cut and paste, for I am taking all the prophecy together.
No, there is only one true God, "the God of Abraham" is the lable of His, to not confuse Him with a single Pagan God, or Budhas God, or you get it. OK,well, I'll just say it like this: YHWH is the only true God. ^^ Why I believe in the Bible? I basicly already answered that, because of the personal relationship that is promised IN the Bible TO God! This way in the Bible has shown itself to tell me the one and only true way to actually GET the relationship back that was taken away by sin, the ONLY way to get that relationship back ( Jesus ). Understand? ^_^
