Lately I've been having delusions/hallucinations. I'm not on any drugs. I am depressed/bipolar, (they STILL aren't sure!) who is "they" anyways? grrrr....anyways,...it's mainly at night. I hear sounds & see things. Not all burly, just maybe a weird light or something. It was all the same & then the other night I heard my name & I seriously heard "help me." It's only at night. I also can't sleep as much because of the noises. I hate feeling crazy. I just know I need something. I don't want to be put on antidepressants again & I want something homeopathic; no shock treatment for me. My uncle who was like my second father died recently & I guess it's all been going on since about when he died. I guess I'm going to have to make a trip to the doctor. I have a really good doctor I somethimes see who is way more into homeopathic things so I'm going to have him recommend a new psychiatrist who is more into that sort of thing. I'm just afraid I'm going to find out I have something worse. I'm probably not totally making sense.

Has anyone ever had symptoms like this? What did you find out?

The best way to get rid of delusions/hallucinations is to simply ignore them. Just divert your attention to something else. Create a conscious thought and a new thought pattern and they should go away. Having said that, though, I haven't really had a serious problem with this so I don't know if it will help you completely.

Well, beyond trying to ignore them… do you sleep well? Since you hear them mostly at night, I would imagine it could be hard to fall asleep and would create a lot of anxiety. Anxiety alone can cause some pretty crazy things, and sleep deprivation can definitely cause hallucinations. I would suggest talking to a psychologist. They can’t prescribe medicine. CBT is my favorite therapy, it’s something that anyone would benefit from, imo. It’s great for treating both depression and bipolar disorder, plus, if they need to refer you someplace else, they’d be most likely to give you advice you want, as their first recommendation isn’t going to be “take this.”

Some good info on hearing things:

if you are hearing voices, you might be schizophrenic. In which case, it is a good idea to get it checked out pronto, because certain anti-psychotics can halt the progression of the disease (because once developed, some symptoms are for the most part irreversible).

Freedbypeace...my mom went from regular biplolar to mild schizophrenic and it really shocked me.

Spooner, you are right on. But how can you be so smart (compliment), but look so out of it with the police car and the part about 'coke.' You know that will destroy your wonderful intelect.

The LSD route would be really risky and might put you into orbit with advanced schizophrenia. You need a really fine psychiatrist who can get you on the right medications the first time. Some doctors never get the meds and dose right so you feel bla...like you described. The touch...feely...'homopathetic' route will probably a waste of time and money.

Has anyone seen true story movie, "A Beautiful Life" about a college math wizard who turns schizophrenic, gets fired, becomes homeless, then fights the voices, and gets his job back?

I have had problems with this as well, mostly at night too, and i'll hear things that are threatening... I haven't really figured it out, but i just try to absorb myself into a comedy movie or i'll talk to one of my friends on the phone... anything to get my mind off it, although it is very hard. Good luck, really. I understand what you mean about the pills making you "blah", too...

Thats a very textbook solution to a very undefined problem. Medications can also worsen symptoms and become very unhealthy after prolonged use.

I recommended she see a psychiatrist. She debatably meets the criteria of the DSM for a Schizoaffective mood disorder. This generation's atypical anti-psychotics tend to avoid some of the previous generation's negative side affects (particularly tremors). Which are of course still much metter than many of the negative symptoms that become permanent with the disease, but can be avoided completely if treated early enough.

I also find it mildly hilarious that you use 'textbook' as an insult - as if you're Freud's great-grandson and have some great insight into the craft of psychology. Having a mental illness doesn't necessarily make you knowledgeable about them.

You're not schizophrenic, of course, I can't know for sure. But I had many hallucinations, I was bipolar, I wasn't eating or sleeping and I was stressed out, those three things are the main causes of hallucinations.

Also after someone important to me died, this sort of thing happened. If you'd like to talk more about this feel free to message me.

Being schizophrenic was also my biggest fear, but I don't worry about it anymore. And I don't have hallucinations or anything anymore, and I'm definately not on any drugs.

And you expect us to listen to you just because you've been through some tough times? Listen buddy, everyone goes through those tough times and a lot of people go on to lead respective lives, so don't sit here and say how you've been to hell and back and are a savior because your not.

Spooner, sounds like you are getting on track so keep your steel wheels firmly on the tracks by carrying your heavy workload. The poli sci goal is really fine so begin to check out career starts now.

Do you have a career plan?
Where are you going to look for a job start?

You might do well working for a newspaper as a political columnist. Readers like a guy with carisma.

What do you think the underlying problem is that has caused the arrests and self medication with cocaine? mania....bipolar....what?

    bye....Eagle Feather....
