It makes me kinda sad that all you can find from the younger generation is dissapointment, it also makes me doubt the nature of peoples intent too in a way. All I know is that im a young woman who cares passionately and deeply about every single living thing on this planet, and that includes all those less fortunate to be caught up in the terrible depraved lifestyle we call capitalism. Its nobodys fault that the world is the way it is today, its just a terrible shame that somewhere along the line the definition of freedom changed and somebodys great ideas for the future of the world were sadly blown out of all proportion, and in all likelyhood taken far beyond what they were ment to be, in other words, somebody made an innocent mistake and this is the resulting situation...There is no good or evil in this world, just a sad misinterpretation of all that life in its myriad of forms was and is ment to be... people today are so caught up in their own lives and so terribly scared of loosing in some way that there is just no time for a pause, for a reflection...no time to stop and marvel at all nature has to offer us, the movements of the trees in the wind, the miracle of germination and growth, the way a sunrise looks to you when you've spent all night on a beach with a few friends sitting where the waves lap the shore, just talking and enjoying life and its beauty. Theres so much that people just miss out on in the lives they lead, so much that is fundamental to our understanding and existance on this planet that just passes us by without even meriting a second glance, all we need to do to make this world right, peacefull and filled with joy is just to stop, to look, really look, and appreciate everything. I dont know what these values make me, hippy or something else, all I know for sure is that we BELONG to nature, we are in our very essence nature, yet this world has become so warped and twisted that we are in our everyday lives denied the contact with nature that we all so desperately need. I joined this website because the hippy philosophy seems to be the one that is closest to my own, and reflects my own views upon life...theres so much more I could say here, I hope you older hippies havent given up on us youths quite yet =o)...PEACE LOVE AND EMPATHY, Sarah
I don't mean to browbeat the "younger crowd". I just get annoyed with the ones that condescend as if they have SO much more experience and knowledge than those of us that have actually lived "awhile". All I ask if that "young hippies" acknowledge those of us that have been doing that for decades, and stop "talking down" to us. We've already paid our dues...so to speak I really admire those of you that actually try to do something to make the world better. The ones that don't and still preach, I get annoyed with them not because they're younger, but because they can be such jerks. Best wishes to you sister.
Argh, i didnt realise I was talking down to you =oS, I was just kinda trying to write how I feel about the situation today, hope I didnt cause offence! I have so much respect for all you guys who lived throught the sixties because you were the ones who actually stood up and did something, there doesnt seem to be enough of that happening these days... I guess it always starts with a small number of people though, maybe it should be me and my friends! Sarah ^_^
Alice-Take a deep breath and relax a little-You have many years yet to go-Don't work yourself into a stait jacket or a stroke!--Young people can die from stress as well as us old timers-lol-keep smiling while yer fighting!
They disappoint you probably because they don't have the same values we did in the 60's and 70's. We were the ones that started the value system back then so, the words to music and such meant a lot to us. That is how we explained our feelings was through the music we heard and played. We were an amazing generation and what is complimentary to us now, is some of the styles and such are trying to copy what we invented such as our own personal styles, foods we chose for better health, and freedom from following the crowd back then. We believed in everything we did and said and because of that, the world has gained much. Natural foods, politcal causes, etc. The hippies have made many changes that most people don't even give us credit for. So that's what I think that is missing from the hippies of today, their basically trying to copy us, but it won't work since their not from the original mold. But, remember , there will be people like yourself that will bring their own style and ideas to this world too, such as, their will be ones like you that will believe in the right causes, ideas, and beliefs and carry the right HIPPY WAYS.
Some of the young uns' really do mean it. Some of them are activist..big time. Those young people absolutely don't disappoint me. (they "get it") Many of the others though...think it's all about "those four little things" ...clothes, hair, drugs, sex. (they don't "get it") They take the hedonist part of it, and throw away the rest. Some of them are just so errrrr....fake. It's a fashion thing. They seem to have no respect for real reasons some of us watched the movement as kids and admired it, all of it. (not just the four little things) It's like finding out that the meaning of life is just......toe socks.
playing devils advocate here.... how many of the hippies started changing the world before the 60's happened. How many hippies just became hippies when it became the "cool" thing to do? Very succesful people in the 60's (the musicians like The Beatles, the Stones and Dylan..) were going on and putting across an image of love and peace. Nowadays all we see in the media is violence, sex and being from the 'hood. IS it really a wonder that kids don't come out and start trying to make a difference? who exactly are they hearing the message from? Just because a kid hangs out on a "hippie" forums doesn't mean they think its cool to be politically involved, they just think its cool to have long hair, smoke pot, and listen to rock and roll. I'm one of these young people and a lot of my friends don't even read the newspaper! I know lot's of kids who are fairly politically involved and aware, but lot's just don't notice the world around them. They've lived in one place for there whole lives and aren't aware of the repercussions of these kinds of things. Mostly, though teenagers are driven by a desire to fit in. Why do you think theres a "youth culture" but not an "adult culture". All people are, but teenagers moreso, if everyones not doing it, why should they?
point made. Tell me this......why do they call themselves hippies if they're just kinda' sorta' a little bit hippyish. Why call themselves anything at all.
I think all of the cerebral and conscious-raising experience banter is probably best found on the Gay forum. <HA!>
I think it is entirely consistant for the young hippies to make and follow their own path rather than follow the conventional hippie way laid out by older and wiser heads.
I ran away from home when I was 17 years old and became a hippie. That was in 1968. I missed the "summer of love", but I did go to Haight Ashbury and I already had friends there when I got there, whom I had met when I went to a commune in Northern New Mexico. I hitch hiked from coast to coast and all over the place, and I lived almost ten years on hippie communes. We were totally divorced from any sort of commercialism. We considered Tim Leary to be a big fraud and an expoiter, because we knew plenty of people who had known him personally, and when he turned his own son in to the police in order to stay out of jail, we knew all about that and we scorned him roundly for that. Yes, we were mostly vegetarians, we were into peace and non-violence, and our biggest musical hero was Bob Dylan, not the Beatles. Hippies who lived on communes and such and who moved in the circles from which the core of these folks emerged did not refer to themselves as "hippies" initially. That was pretty much considered by these people as a commercial term invented by Hollywood. It was not until later that people rather grudgingly adopted that term. They refered to themselves (sort of in the style of Navajo) as "people". For instance, I don't know how many times I saw this scene repeated: We would meet some new folks (like they would show up at our commune in Northern New Mexico there) and someone would ask where they were from. If it wasn't New York or San Franciso, the question would invariably be asked "are there people there"? This was not some evasive question. Everyone knew what it meant. It meant were there REAL hippies there - not just some local kids who like to use drugs and don't have a clue who Phil Ochs of Joan Baez are - of The Fugs or Allen Ginzberg, for that matter. This image that was being promoted at the same time was pretty much the Hollywood verson of something being carried out by people who would not get involved with Hollywood or anything commercial for all the tea in China. The disgrace and shame of such a notion would be more than they could bear. No. We had almost no material goods, no money, no car, no nothing. We were proud to have really and truly dropped out of society. We all were fascinated with astrology, the I Ching, and the Tarot, and none of things were very well known at all until (as might be expected) commercial interests noticed that these things were to be considered "hip" and they started to expoit the whole thing commerically. So, I have to say, on the issue of "old hippies", that there are like these parallel universes. As for myself, I would urge young people who are interested in what hippiedom is really all about to seek out the things I am talking about here and to emulate them. Because all of the commerial stuff isn't worth a plugged nickle. But the essence of what we were really all about and what we were up to is very worthy. I can tell you right now that I have an endless supply of stories and essays that I could contribute to this discussion, but I want to know if anyone is actually interested, because I already have a lot of things going on the internet with all of my e-mail groups and websites, and my virtual store. This seems like a very good thing to get into - promoting "true hippieism", as it were - and I would love to do just that, but only if I think I have an audience.
