Hi all, Ive got a quick question. I have been a vegetarian for going on 13 years now and about a week and half ago made the switch to vegan as well as cutting out all wheat/gluten from my diet. I was feeling really wonderful and had lots of energy right after making the changes in my diet but the last couple of days I have been feeling really nauseous and tired.. I also have been exercising almost every day but today was feeling so weak and sick to my stomach I just laid in bed all day. I take a multivitamin and have been trying to get plently of protien as well.. Does anyone know if this feeling is normal and maybe I am just detoxing and if there is anything I can do to maybe speed up the process or anything I might be doing wrong? Also, I have noticed since making the diet changes I seem to be sensitive to soy as well.. so now I have had to cut that out.. which is making this lifestlye change a little harder.. If anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance
Go to the FAQ and INFO/dietary. It has links to some good web site to tell you what you need in your diet. If you are really concerned you could go see a nutrsionist. * http://www.vegsoc.org/info/vegan-nutrition.html * < that link give you a detailed vegan nutrition. (its in the FAQ and INFO/dietary as well) As for your soy problem try beans, and milk there is almond milk, rice milk etc... Good luck
The FAQ and INFO/dietary link, so far to my experience, has not provided helpful information as far as detox/withdrawal issues when switching (a couple of the links are now invalid). I suggest links be added to sites dealing with health issues when switching (and those other links be updated). Now, back to the original topic, LoneNomad, I just posted my own thread asking similar questions before I saw this one. Ooops. Oh well, just wanted to let you konw that you're not the only one that has experienced nausea and the like. I switched cold-turkey from a regular everything-included diet to vegan, and for the first two weeks I was sick one way or another and I am still dealing with nausea issues on week three. So you're not alone. Hope we both get the answers we are looking for!
I think the sicky feelings are a part of the detox. You might be dealing with a bit of yeast issues also as you just stopped using wheat as well. As the yeasties die off you can feel really sick until it's all over. I'm in week five, going into week six of being vegetarian. I still have bouts of nasuea and just plain not feeling well. But I keep reminding myself that my body is going through rapid changes. My blood sugar has been in the normal range for the first time in years. And my eyesight has improved so much I had to get new glasses. So I know the changes are happening and I just have to put up with the sicky feelings for a bit more. I'm sure it will level out soon. You shouldn't have as much of a change as I did since you went from veggie to vegan. I went from Omni to veggie. And I gave up fast food. That's a pretty big change. But you also gave up wheat. That is a very major change for your body. Good luck, Hope you feel better soon. Kathi
y'all, please note which links are gone and let me know what goodies you find on switch/detoc etc. back to your regularly scheduled thread [/hijack]
About the soy sauce--normal soy sauce has wheat in it, so you might try to find a wheat-free tamari sauce. Other than that, I don't know because I'm a fairly new, and still inconsistent vegan (switching over from just meat-free). I'm also avoiding wheat products due to a suspected gluten sensitivity....
I am feeling a little better today so we shall see what happens.. Good luck with your diet change as well.. If you ever find any good recipies that are vegan and gluten free I would LOVE to hear about them.. ill pass whatever I find along too.. I did find a pretty good chocolate chip cookie at the health food store which is vegan and gluten free... but i would really like to find a GOOD recipe to make my own treats... Anyways, have a great day and thanks for responding.. Also thanks to everyone else who responded as well.. things are feeling a little better Im hoping they stay this way.
It might not be related to your dietary change, though if it is, it is probably just related to a detox type action. When I first went vegan I couldn't stop using the toilet, but it got better very quickly. I've been sick with some flu type thing for the past week, it could just be some bug you caught and not related at all.
What is the deal with wheat/gluten? why do people give up wheat/gluten? is there something bad that I'm missing? I've been told that some people are allergic, but that doesn't explain the people that intentionally stop eating wheat.
