So I sent an email to Post inquiring about the ingredients in their Raisin Bran...low and behold they inform me the Vitamin D they use is D3! They have 9, simple ingredients which make it so easy to understand but then they fortify it with a cholesterol-based vitamin?!:$ Is there any health difference between D2 and D3, or is it just cost?? Just need some place to vent as there are not too many people who would understand my frustration.
http://www.vrg.org/nutshell/faqingredients.htm#d3 apparantly D3 is usually animal derived, and might be more potent?
I believe it's generally a matter of cost. There was a small hooha recently about Brendan Brazier's Vega powders and bars containing D3 (lanolin derived, for those who don't know) - turns out he didn't know about it, as he'd given the vitamin people strict instructions then left them to it. Unfortunately, deliberately or otherwise, they slipped up. Having been informed of its presence, Brazier has now changed it to D2. In the above case, it was obviously easier, given that Brazier is as committed a vegan as anybody and it was, on his part, a genuine oversight. However, might a bit of gentle pressure help in the Raisin Bran situation as well? Writing to the manufacturers (am I right in thinking that it's a cereal made by Kelloggs?) and pointing out the problem certainly wouldn't hurt. I'm going to look into this. Peace, Bunbury.
