if you have not heard of this band...shame...shame

holyfuck hails from toronto. their style (if there is one?) may be some beautiful mutation of electronic/noiseart/dance. however, it is much too difficult a task to classify this band from just listening to their cd. one must see them live. their recordings are all done live, improvised and unrehearsed. their show is the same too. on stage they have live drums and base while two guys work on table filled with keyboards, guitar pedals, mixers and even a 35mm film synchronizer. their mission is to remake modern electronic music but without using computers and backing tracks and junk. this is exactly what makes their performance so fucked. i just saw them for the first time live at the hillside festival last weekend. me and my buddy got real close and packed up front of the stage and lit up a big joint before they came on. as soon as their music started i was like "my god...what is that fucking danceable noise?" for the rest of the time i was fucking tripping so hard. i was dancing myself into a rage and sweating hard. if you knew me, youse would know that i never dance. this stuff was just the best to flip out too. on the other hand...actually, no. the same hand i think that this music may also be an audio portal to hell. you might think to yourself "why am i dancing to this?". well, i'll tell you that the only answer is:

    the devil wants your soul

it WILL cause you to say afterwards, no matter how often you use the word...holyfuck.

These guys are just plain sick. I saw them play in the US and hadn't heard of them before, but as an older and wiser individual who grew out of the rave scene but still appreciates experimental electronica I decided to check them out. My goodness do they rawk. They have a limited instrumental arsenal in a bass player, live drummer, and then 2 guys on old school Korg or Casio keyboards (yeah the old x-mas present battery operated ones) running through all type of effects loops. The best was their incorparation of a telegraph and film splicing machine hooked up to pickups. Everything is improvised live and left me awestruck. No wonder they're called Holy Fuck.
