I'm surprised no one has yet to mention the names Stuart Hamm and John Myung.

I would also include the following on my list:

    - Billy Sheehan
    - Les Claypool
    - Flea
    - John Paul Jones
    - Cliff Burton
    - Michael Anthony
    - Paul McCartney

There are more, but I could only come up with the above for the time being.

    Flea rocks it out.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Steve Harris of Iron Maiden! Listen to their early stuff - so many awesome, really original basslines that just drive the songs. He's a fantastic bassist.

Those are my two favourite bassists.

Flea kicks ass. not my favorite though

Phil Lesh is a great melodic bass player

Paul Mccartney is just genius, a great musician and bass player

Roger waters is an extremely brilliant songwriter, but he WAS NOT a very complex or intricate bassist.

I dunno, its hard to judge John Paul Jones and Entwistle. I mean, they were completely overshadowed by everyone else in their bands. I think alot of people are choosing them solely because they come from two of the greatest rock bands ever.

    Les Claypool is just great.

oh my god, I completely forgot

Danyel Morgan - The bass player from Robert Randolph & the family Band.

this guy sings falsetto, and can absolutely rip a 6 string bass to hell and back.

check them out, you'll know what im talking about.

Billy Sheehan and Flea rock - Jaco Pastorius is amazing, although he's not a rock bassist really.

I agree. In my opinion Roger is the greatest songwriter and lyricist but he's not an extraordinarily gifted bass guitarist. Those would be Paul McCartney, Noel Redding, Jack Casady, John Paul Jones, Geddy Lee, John Entwistle, Les Claypool, Cliff Burton, Jason Newsted. Yeah you read that right, Jason Newsted. I'm a big fan of his and I think he's under-rated. Ever since he left, Metallica have sucked as a live act (and as a whole).

Bill Wyman, if only for the dive bomb ending to '19th Nervous Breakdown'. Also, his work on '2000 Light Years From Home' and 'Miss You' and particularly memorable.

McCartney and Entwistle were the ones who changed the face of bass guitar from an ignored background instrument to an aggressive one. Noel Redding, Jack Casady and John Paul Jones took it to a new level..
