    I need some information, if that's okay:)

    I'm working towards a career as a midwife, and I was just wondering what kind of training is needed.

    Would it be easier to get an nursing degree and then go on to midwifery? Or is there a way I could just do some general studies courses and then go on to midwifery.

    I await your wisdom, and thank you for your time:D

    It depends...if you want to become a certified nurse midwife, then there is college required...nurising degree. If you want to become a lay midwife, the best thing to do is find one in your area. For instance, there are a few midwives in my town, and they have created their own program for training which includes apprentiships.

    No offense, sugrmag, but I, and many midwives, positively LOATHE the term "lay" midwife. "Lay" implies no training or education, or lack of professional qualifications. I am a highly skilled, highly trained professional, just not nursing-school trained.

    Star, in Canada, it depends on the province you live in the type of training will be available to you.
    Check out;

    You can get an idea of what is available for you in your province, and what is legal or not.
    Good luck!

    No problem, Darlin'! It's a commonly used term.
    But if we are to be accepted as the professionals that we are, we have to watch the language, ya know?

    Thanx for the links, I'll have a better look at the Canadian Midwives site when my STARVING children have been fed (my eldest is sooo dramatic;) ). I had a look at the Patti Ramos site, the pictures are beautiful.

    Thank you again for the replies:)

    i have been in the process of trying to find different approaches to a career in midwifery in the past few years.

    as of now i am taking a few classes at our tech college that I feel are good info to have as a midwife, child development, developmental psych, anatomy and physiology etc. and i am also going to be apprenticing a few midwives in the area that have a shop, and watching videos etc.
    there are also a lot of conferences if you know any midwives, they can tell you where they are. i would suggest finding a midwife in your area and talking to her. or a few.
