This has probably been asked before, but the search option is totally not working for me! What's the best thing to wrap my dreadies with? I'm guessing wool or something.. what bout hemp? I dyed a bunch of hemp and I'd like to use that.. but I dont know if it would desigrate, or start to mold or something... Thanks!
Hemp is less likely to degenerate than wool, actually, as Hemp is fundamentally waterproof. Really, all in all, for reasons ranging from cultural to political to biological, I would recommend hemp. .....'specially if you died it yourself. =)
Hemp is a pretty good choice. It was used for flags and sails. It whoulsn't mold or anything. That's cool that you dyed it yourself. I'ld love to see pics of the final result! Peace and love
Do you actually know how to do it, or are you just winging it? I have no idea how to do it, but it can't be that hard, it's just wrapping something over and over really evenly right? Good luck, and tell me how it goes!
I wrapped a dread in hemp once and it was kind of gooky when I took it out (Yeah gooky isn't a word, but that's all I can describe it as)...kind of sticky-like. Like any wrap, it traps water inside longer so your hair is wetter for longer which can cause problems like MOLD I guess that's just the logic talking....I have a piece of hemp in my hair right now that has a fairy attached to it...I don't know if THAT one is gooky, since it is only in a small section of my hair.
you have to take hemp wraps out since it retains water for so long. but since you dont know how to do them, it'll probably fall out pretty early along anyway. i like putting them in my hair because my hair is the same color pretty much as regular hemp.
im just ganna wing it too, cuz my dreads are lookin plain right about now, only a single lonley bead hangin in there haha. i guess just dont do it tooo tight, but not too loose haha im probably ganna screw mine up somehow
I have a metal wrap with small beads around two dreads that I want to congo. My mom made it for me and I like it 'cause it's original...:sunglasse
Yeah, about the pictures. My digi cam is broke, so my picture taking abilities limited. As soon as I get the money to get it fixed, I'll post mad pictures. I STILL haven't wrapped my dreads... I have had NO TIME!! Too much working for me... I hate it!!!!!
Out of boredom and curiousity, I crocheted a couple of little hemp "dread sleeves" the other day. If any of you know how to crochet, it's a pretty good way to go. I was going for more of a bead look, so I made one that's only 1-1.5" and one that's about 3" long, but you could keep on going and make a really long one if you wanted to. It would give you a similar look to an actual wrap, but you would still be able to take it off and on in case of shower, etc. ... Just an idea!
I know how to knit and crochet! Gimme some more details on this, if ya could please... Thanks! Oh, and by the way, I was looking in your gallery and your dreadies are GORGEOUS! Me likey... AND you blow glass? I wish I knew how to do that..
lol, I guess I'm just the crafty sort (In fact, today I'm working on a custom phat patchy skirt! ) Crocheting those was REALLY easy. I used fine hemp (20-25 lb test) and a small hook, same as I use to wrap jars... I chained 8-10, and made that into a loop. This is the hole for your "bead" or "sleeve" or whatever, so how many you chain will determine the size dread it will fit on. Then I just built up from there, going around and around. In the little one I did, I used all single crochet so it looks nice and tight. But if you're going for a longer "sleeve" look, you might want to switch it up and use double (or triple) crochet to speed things up. From there, you can change what stitch you use a little from row to row to create patterns. Even switch colors. I don't know if that description was all that helpful Picture it just like a sort of crocheted-finger-condom.... or better yet, I'll post a pic of the ones I did! And thank you for the kind words for my hair... My dreadies are more than five years old now, I can hardly believe it!
Yeah, that makes senses, and seems really easy! Thanks for the directions! Crocheted-finger-condom... what's the world coming to!?!?!
lol, sorry about the lack of pictures - I'm not slacking, just having camera trouble! Now that I re-read what I wrote, though, it's pretty self-explanatory without the pics...
Here's a pic of my dread wrap. A friend did it for me using embroidery thread with cowrie shells tied in. click on thumbnail to enlarge
