Well i was stoned one day in my buddies car and we were lsiteing to to some pink floyd and i was thinking "melody"then we listened to some rap and i was thinking "rythm".And then i remembered something carlos santana said on TV one time, he said that rythm or beat is masculine and melody is feminen, at the time i thought he was jsut a tripped out bastard but maybe he knew what he was saying. So where am i going with this?, well i'll try to explain the idea i have but its nothing that crazy it just trippes me the fuck out when i think about it.

well I was thinking that beat or rythm helps keep you alert because it measures time(you know kind of like a clock couning the secounds tick tick tick, think drummer), and kind of keeps you in the here and now. It does this(i think) by causing a flow of dopeamine in the brain(dopeamine is the neurotranmitter that makes it possible for short term memory and concentration)(or maybe its testosterone? it ahs to be something). And you know how a beat kind of pumps you up, example the army will play drums to pump the soldiers up before a battle.

And melody, key word mellow, now this ones harder to explain i honestly think it causes a flow of serotonin(ever do exctacy?) which is the neorotransmitter whih makes it possible for long term memory. Ever listen to a nice song you like in bed and kind of get lost in the melody and lose all sense of time? And i've noticced when i lsiten to say pink floyd or something melodic i get a kind of peacefull feeling and just relax.(as opposed to say rap music where i'm more alert and "upbeat")

Does this make any sense? i'm pretty stoned right now and i'm trying to figure out what exactly music is and its ahrd to organise my toughts. Why does it has the power to create emotions in people. Any one have any ideas of jsut what the hell music is? its tripping me the fuck out!

i dunno, sounds a bit like pseudoscience to me...
i think music is so powerful because it goes straight to the feelings, if you understand what im trying to say... while you've got to watch a movie or a painting and bay attention to find out what it's about, you just 'feel' the music instantly.

This is interesting. Though, I find music to be alot like drugs; it affects different people in different ways. While a certain type of music will have a general effect on most people, there will always be some people that get a completely different effect from it, just like drugs. MOST people get laid back and relaxed when they get stoned, but some people get hyper and really uptight. Different music/drugs affect people differently and can have many different effects. This is gonna be an interesting thread, I think.

yeah generally, though you usually have to combine the two in songs, or it'll sound kind of weird

    yes, ofcourse
and actually it's the 3rd minor interval, that sounds sad/mellow/dark
[for example the interval between A and C, on Am chord (A-C-E) ]

and the 3rd major interval that sounds happy/bright
    [ for example interval between C and E, on a C chord (C-E-G) ]

Also, if you want to make a sad song, a good advice is to write it on a minor key,
or a major key if you want it to be happy.
(There are exceptions, but i think it's a good starters' advice)

ps: sorry for being too technical, but i got excited:)

^^no i dind't mean it like that silly man
Rap is pretty manly though, at least gangsta rap with the swearing and the violence and the bitches and hoes. But pink floyd is certaninly not for girls, its for stoners and people tripping on acid:D

i think most songs have major and minor chords.. some have only major chords, and some have powerchords. I think i'm yet to hear a song with 100% minor chords

There are..other chords you know. Augmented and diminished being 2 prime examples. I think they'd make you feel more on edge than major and minor ones because of the intervals. In fuckin' diminished chords there's a diminished 5th,which sounds really evil, and composers used to be fuckin' murdered for using it in their tuneskis as it was part of "The Devil's Tritone" and stuff.

But dude I know exactly what you're saying. I always thought it was because when yer listening to bangin' beats your heart, because you're so alert and awake and everything from the dope (awake in a..spiritual sense),tries to beat in time with the music to try and be eh..a single entity if you get me? 'Cos your subconcious notices that "Fuck man, this bass isn't slowing down,I'd better speed up".. whereas with Floyd and stuff it's more about the floaty guitar sounds and it isn't as intense usually.

Though Time fucked me up pretty bad when I was on shrooms, but that's another story altogether.

You should do research. Pwopa research.

i think its true that beats keep you in the moment because teh beat puts all the notes in order. even floyd has a beat, of course. pretty much all music has a beat except ambient music, which isnt meant to put you in a moment but engluf a set of moments.

beat doesnt really give much feeling except a context for the notes around it, or the dance moves you do, or to some light show or something or other. rappers use beat to put words and profanes into a structure, much as electronica uses beats to structure dancing and climaxes of pitch. floyd uses beats to keep chords and noises in order, but puts emphasis on the sounds.
it should be recognised that any music that is in time will include notes on beats, but we have percussion to emphasise beat independantly of notes. depending on the music, this is desirable or undesirable

colour and sound can sorta be related as: hue translating as notes, and lightness/darkness/shade translating as beat. even that is a very loose comparison.

    its a complex topic, music

They're pretty dull really. Everyone plays maj7ths and thinks they're a jazz musician

there's a lot of songs with all minor chords. comparitively, not that many. at least in popular music anyway. just off the top of my head, i think a lot of reggae songs use all minors. like some of Bob Marley's songs, some of the ones on Catch A Fire. They just use the 3 minor chord pattern. i think it's 6-2-3. it's like the 3 chord blues pattern of 1-4-5, only minor.
