will it be a waste of a disc if i just burn this file to a cd or do i need to convert it to a different kind of file? and if i need to convert, what program do i use?

off the top of my head, i'd need many more details, but i know where you can find the answer...usenet group alt.binaries.movies.dvix...they post a fabulous FAQ about all of that stuff.

Depends if your dvd player can play xvid/divx files (some do but I think most don't), otherwise you need to convert it to VCD format (mpeg1) before burning to disc. I use TMPGEnc (which has a free version) for that kind of thing. You'll have to look up how to do it yourself 'cos I can't be bothered to explain:)

It can get pretty complicated with the various codecs, settings, sound synch problems etc. Afaik there is no program that will just do the conversion simply with a few clicks because there are so many possible variables, but you may be lucky and have a straightforward one. VCD will also be MUCH lower quality than the original avi... have fun:)

we PM'd this info, but i'll post a FYI to the people...the other alternative is to go with a dvd burner and retail-nero...it'll do all the work for you. using dvd/-r or /-rw will get you compatability with almost any player.
