Since 2004, the Buckeye Dog Auction in Millersburg, OH has grown into anything but run-of-the-mill. Most (if not all) breeders who participate in this event are raising large numbers of puppies for profit in mills - mass dog breeding establishments with horrendous living conditions characterized by overcrowding, filth, and lack of food, water and little to no veterinary care. Many of these puppies and adult dogs are hauled to the auction in tractor trailers (which is against the law), and some breeds are able to fetch more than a few thousand dollars, while others can net hundreds of dollars for the seller. By signing this petition, you are asking Robert Restrepo, Jr., Chairman, CEO and President of State Auto Mutual Insurance Company, to terminate the auction bond (Certificate # 6913179) for this event effective immediately. The staging area (entrance to the auction in which buyers can "view the livestock") smelled like a cesspool. What was most disturbing was the number of dogs who were immediately registered with the American Kennel Club following the winning bid. I cannot imagine that any of these breeders are improving the health, temperament and quality of purebred dogs. My team of protesters were awarded several dogs which were surrendered by the auctioneers to Holmes County Humane Society. All of them were in a severe state of neglect, one of which included a beautiful eight year old German Shepherd who had a good portion of her jaw deteriorated due to overbreeding. She is now in foster with me, my husband and our "Shaver 4" (three rescue collies - one a mill rescue - and a rescue sheltie). I am more committed than ever to following Pennsylvania's lead in shutting down these type of auctions, and I will be working diligently with the support of local rescue groups and the dedicated volunteers of Holmes County Humane Society - http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/OH327.html - to help end this worst form of animal cruelty. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/846327093
Umm dog's jaws don't deteriorate due to "overbreeding". That has got to be one of the weirdest things I have ever seen claimed. I don't like the idea of dog auctions but it is legal so I'm not sure on what grounds they are requesting it be banned. I have known dogs bought from this very auction - some were in poor condition, some weren't so bad. Most of the dogs bought there are not AKC registered although some are. There are now plenty of "easier" registries for commercial breeders to use such as APRI and CKC. I don't support commercial breeding in this manner. However I also don't support animal rights and anti-breeding propaganda. In looking at links related to this petition I certainly found hints of support of both. I think I'll pass on adding my name to the list.
