yeah, good luck. learning german is really hard. just try to use it as much as possible. ex: if you're handing something out just count to yourself in german or if a question pops into your head try to translate it into german. that probably doesn't help too much, but it's the best I can do ( I grew up speaking it, so I didn't have to learn it)

    Good luck!

Well, I think it is very difficult to say how long it takes, since the learning effecieny varies from person to person and method to method and and how long you take it and so on.
I started learning english words in 4th grade or so, since I really wanted to speak english, because for some reason my dad had a friend who was MP in one of the Barracs here, and I wanted to talk to him!
Then most german kids have to take English in Fifth grade. I had it until the end of 7th. Then my parents moved to Tunisia, and I went to an American Overseas SChool there. At my first day, I barely understood anything! The main Problem was probably the accent, and the speed. It took me about 3 month to understand about everything and to speak kind of fluent. I spent 2 years there, the went back to germany, and then had all As in English...hahahahaha.
There are people who still barely speak english after 9 years taking it, others are pretty fluent after half the time. It just depends how much you try to use it outside of school in your daily life!

A good method to learn german, or any language in fact, is to read a lot. In the beginning easy things like children's novel or something like that, because the topics and the words are easier. A german author who's very fun to read is Michael Ende, one of my favorite books by him is "jim knopf lukas der Lokomotivführer

Well, for us here in Germany, English isn't very hard to learn cause both languages have the same roots - English is a mixture of German and Romanic influences. This, in combination with the easy English grammar, makes it not very hard to learn. I think learning German as an English-speaker is harder.
