    Hey!
Have any of you guys been to Sri Lanka?
I spent a month out there this summer, travelling around and doing some work in a school, hospitals and helping out with the ongoing tsunami recovery projects!
I would love to promote the island as I loved it! If anyone is stuck for somewhere to go then I would recommend Sri Lanka!
It's full of lone travellers and interesting people to meet!
One of my favourite places was Arugam Bay, a small secret surfing spot inhabited by some of the coolest people around! There's an underlying Bob Marley vibe and an aim just to chill, party and smoke a whole lotta dope!
I'd love to hear anyone else's fav places in the world! :)

Yeah but Nepal is apparently 'dodgy' so hmmm...

Sri Lanka sounds good though but left off my intinery last time as i considered it just an extension to india (India but buddhist), like bangladesh (india but predomianntly muslim)...Definitely next trip i'll go to these countries as i've read into them and both seem unique their own right!

Yea I have to say the situation is a lil bad! We were stopped several times when we were driving around the East and North by men with machine guns!!
At one point we were told to get out and line up along the van...really scary!

And I didn't come across any tigers... but elephants! Wild ones! :D So much more amazing to see them in the wild :)

umm... no... i didn't mean Tiger in the "growl" animal sense... meant it more in the Tamil Tiger sense.

    Oh right! *feels very stupid*
Yea well actually we spoke with some Tamils :) they're not as bad as everyone is making out. I guess they're just a bit extreme and believe they should have their own part of the country.

I enjoyed my trips to Sri Lanka in the 90's. I know the press is saying it's bad right now, but the Tamil Tiger situation has been dodgy for some time. I was staying in the Columbo Hilton when the trade center bomb went off in 1997 and later that same week I found myself in a trench while the Tamils mortared the Sri Lankan Army while I was teaching a technical training seminar. Other that my hotel windows blowing all over my room and being in a mortar attack I had a blast. I have heard of Arugum Bay, but never went.

I'm actually from there, and I'd recommend Trincomelee, but with the situation with the Tigers again, I don't think going up there is entirely safe anymore. Freeinalaska seems to have had quite an experience. Ive been to/ lived in Colombo for a grand total of about 6 years and i never directly saw any violence, although the military is posted literally around every corner
