In society; a person that is 18, is considered an adult, correct? Yes. So anyone over the age is obviously an adult.

Let's say a 45 year old attempting to go after a 16/17 year old; anyone that has half of a brain, and decent sense of morality would agree that compared to the 45 year old, the 17 year old is a young person. Not baby in the context of infancy...baby in the context of an inexperienced to life, young person, i.e not of their prime, mentally nor physically. Fairly simple process of thought...for most of us anyways.

Are they an adult? There not old enough to drink and do many other things. Did you see the legislation about moving the smoking age to 21? The age of an adult is an arbitrary number set by the government and it's on it's way up past 18 to 21. While they continue to hold children as young as 11 responsible as "adults" for their actions, they seem to be raising the age of everything else(except for dying for your country of course.... when they need a war fought suddenly it's convienient for an adult to be 18). 18-20 year olds should not sit still and should start fighting for their rights as adults. And a right as an adult in the United States is to drink alcohol.

Yes they are young, what about a 45 year old "going after" a 18 or 19 year old. There still a teenager, no? ? Or a 50 year old "going after" a 25 year old. There's still a huge age difference. You can't possibly tell me that it's impossible for an older person to fall in love with a younger one!! and so what if they just want to have sex with the younger person. There's nothing wrong with casual sex as long as both parties are honest about it.(and if they do lie, it's morally wrong in my opinion, but it's certainly not rape or a crime) My point is simple, once they understand what's going on and they've gone through most or all of puberty, they should be legal. Basically a 45 year old has no advantage(except maybe he's rich) over a 23 year old. Women generally judge men on looks. That's all that matters, being older doesn't neccessarily give you an advantage. The whole idea behind stachatory rape is that the person doesn't know what their doing and is being molested. This argument obviously can't be made with a 16/17 year. That argument certainly CAN be made when talking about an 11 year old.

To me, 18 seems to be a valid age to consider one an adult. The legistation is attempting to raise the legal age of stupid vices, but that doesn't mean that it is the new found legal age; and it isn't guarunteed that it won't fall through. There are loopholes. There usually always are, it does amaze me to see how intelligent some people can be. Minors always end up having drugs, liquor, and cigs in their hands anyways...right?

Personally, the age of 18 feels right; that is what I'm accostomed to. Once the person is over the age of 18, it is no longer an issue.

I am well aware of the physical difference between a pre-pubescent 11 year old and a 17 year old. In all honesty, there isn't anything about a growth spurt, pubic hair, dropping testicles, or developing tits that is going to change my fucking opinion. So your saying that difference is only physical? That's one of the most idiotic statements I've ever heard. There is NO COMPARISON mentally, emotionally, or in maturity between a 17 year old and an 11 year old. Ask any phycologist. They'll tell you the exact same thing. I simply made the point that a large age difference is not the reason for the legal age to be 18 and if that were the case, a 45 year old would be arrested for having sex with a 25 year old. Your over 18, because of the unclear writing I assumed you meant over 18 as well.

When you write, you have to be much more clear. You can't assume I know what you mean. What might seem clear to you, might not be clear to other people reading your writing. A good definition of writing is the most meaning in the fewest words. Having clarity in your writing is also extremely important. Anyway, thanks for the debate. I still hold my position firmly that the legal age of consentual sex should be lowered to 15/16, but you have your right to your opinion.
