Want to grow plants from seed, need help!

I want to grow some plants from seed, lots of lights, with the whole 12 hours of light 12 hours of dark is out of the question, I basically just want to stick some seeds in a pot, water them and feed them and leave them in my bedroom close to the window for natural light and watch them do their thing. Is this at all possible? What seeds would you recommend buying to grow a few plants in this way?
I am going travelling soon and will be spending a significant period of time on an island off south america, and the only chance I will have of getting some green will be to try and grow my own.

It will depend upon the climate where you are growing. Where I am summer is over so I would have to wait untill next spring.

 

pretty much what bman said but if you can keep your window sill around 70F or higher with a small fan to move the air around it, i would say it probably could be done. If the temps were too much lower than 70F it would probably grow too slow and eventually die. But who knows give it a shot.......as for seeds i would probably use bag seed (unless you don't mind spending the cash on seeds. And if you look at most seed sites they say if they are good for indoor and how difficult they are to grow. One cheap site is nirvana.nl) because chances are a few will probably die off before you get a succesful one that isn't too stretched.....why spend the cash on somethin with so little payoff(maybe a 1/4 oz.)??? just my 2cents.

Cannabis isn't a houseplant - it thrive's, outside, with all day, direct sun exposure. Once it's established, the more direct sun light the better! It can also be grown, very successfully, indoors with the proper environment.
If you're going to be growing in South America thier Winter is just over and thier Spring is comming up. Under natural light, harvest time would be around March or April of next year. But there's a problem. It's one thing to keep a plant alive "close to the window". It's quite another to have it produce anything worth smoking. Even if you grow outdoors - nothing untill March or April, unless you grow the controversial "Lowrider" strain. South America runs from just north of the Equator all the way down to Patagonia, that's tropical to semi-arctic conditions - could you narrow it down a little?
I don't mean to rain on your parade but just be aware of what you're getting yourself into. Unless you're dead-set on growing your own, it's probably a lot cheaper down there

 

hmmm i am kind of a newbie and im not trying to contradict your advise T.H. but i have grown a couple house plants of MJ on my window sill during winter (in South Dakota, USA) are winters are freezing cold but if you keep the inside temp above 70F plus the heat of the sun shining through the window it will grow. Like you said it wont amount to anything really "worth" smoking but if it is a female and you put a little effort into it you might get a 1/4oz. maybe.......hermie....maybe a lil more weight but you got seeds and lower thc.........male......waste of time. But it is possible, if it's a female or hermie, to get some smokeable stuff during the winter time, in the right conditions. But like i said, "the right conditions and low harvest." But if you feel like just trying it there is no harm in trying.

Plus the fact of pretty slow growth and maintaining the 12/12 cycle for flowering and trying to get an effective amount of light for veg. Can be complicated, but can be done. Just depends how much you want to grow your own and how much time you are able to put into your plant. IMHO.

Hey M4N14C420 what should I call you for short? I'm not saying it can't be done - sure it can! This isn't about "poof of concept", it's about reliable supply. If I understood Gixer's post correctly, she will be leaving "soon" for an island "somewhere" off the coast of South America for a "significant period of time" - however long that is!! This "window grow" is thought to be her only source for smoke. Without more clear information and better details how can I give any meaningfull advice? Everything about her post says that she is inexperienced at growing - that's perfectly ok, but what are her chances of really pulling this "window grow" off? Yes, it is possible. But is depending on it practical?

Hey Gixer! It's not really clear if you're going to be growing in South America or growing at home to take with. The more info - the better the advice!! The more you know about growing, the better your chance for success. If you are growing at home there is already a ton of advice, just look back through the various threads on the Growing Forums. "The more you know, the better you grow".
If you're going to be growing on your island I suggest you find a secluded spot outdoors. If you grow out some "Lowrider" seeds (a bunch of them), you will have something to smoke in a about a couple of monthes from germinating the seeds. Try the window grow too, see how it works out.

I don't know where you're going but you can probably buy good stuff there really cheap!

Thanks for the reply's so far, I am very hesitant to say where I am going to be living as it is a VERY small community, and I dont want to be met off the aircraft and searched.
I am going to be living in the southern hemisphere, as far south as is humanly possible to live, the next step is antartica.
There is nowhere to buy weed, and the "authorities" take a very dim view and will have me deported immediately so I really need to be careful.
I cant imagine spending 3 years in one place and not having a puff, so growing my own in secret seemed to be the perfect solution, but a light system etc is really out of the question, people would notice.
I was hoping to find a strain of weed that would be happy to sit in a pot of compost and just grow, with natural light from a window, and a pretty constant temp of whatever the central heating is doing at the time. I am a total novice at growing, but am going to Amsterdam next month and wondered if it was worth while investing in some "hardy" seeds.
Sorry I cant be a bit more specific, there are only a few people I have told where I am moving to, topnotchstoner and a couple of others know, and I trust them completley, I have 2 young children and a family I am trying to protect so please forgive me being so "vague"

Well OK, now I see what we're up against! Tierra del Fuego is at about 55 degrees South latitude. 55 North would be equal to "way deep" into Canada or the lower parts of mainland Alaska. I'm thinking that pretty much puts outdoor growing out of the picture.
When growing marijuana indoors the smell is a dead giveaway, especially in heavely insulated, sealed, environments; why do you think they call it Skunk? LOL There are some high-tech ways to get around it but that's not really my area. Some strains (varieties) are far less pungent, you might have luck with one of those in a window grow. But what it all comes down to is sunlight, direct sunlight. If the plant is in a position to get several hours of direct sunlight, through your window, won't someone outside be able to see it?
It sounds like you should line up some people "back home" to send you some "care packages" once in a while in case this doesn't pan out.

 

Yep I'v been the thinking the same thing, I know outdoor growing is going to be impossible, and the smell does concern me, am thiniing its probably too risky and difficult Maybe "care packages" are the way to go, I hadnt thought of that so cheers!

 

You could try the strain Lowryder it is autoflowering and produces only a small yield. But on the plus side it is ready in only 8 weeks. Its also very hardy. Some of the breeders have crossed the lowryder with more potent strains. With being a very short plant its ideal for a stealth grow.

Im thinking your best bet would be to just receive care packages as well. Being that it is so looked down upon where your going it would probably be too risky to try and grow. But if you still wanted to maybe pick up a pack of seeds in Amsterdam just to have them with you incase you decide to try, might not hurt. But do wichever you feel safe doing and like T.H. said just take an afternoon or somethin some day and read some of the grow journals. I did this for about 2yrs before i tried anything halfway serious. Before that just tried the window sill method. All were males 'cept the one i got now, just started showerin her hairs But the yield will be super small maybe 1/8oz. but smoke is smoke. Sorry, rambling, stoned..........
