we have had a fairly decent harvest thus far even tho we are in a serious drought here for our region.. the early crops for the most parts are done.. we have no viable water source to water,, fall is traditionally our driest months here,, so we are skeptical for our traditional crops that we plant here that do well in the fall,,wich are, peas, squash, turnips, greens etc.. what are good dry weather fall crops??? thanks fer yer replies.. love n light..
peppers? herbs? I dunno, gonna have to focus energy on digging and separating my flower bulbs as soon as weather starts to cool down some. Becoming very discouraged about planting edibles... bunnies, squirrels, racoons, oh my.
Over here on my side of the kudzu patch we've been dry too, for a while. Over the past 5 years, we're 10 foot 8 inches behind in rain. Here's something that helped more than anything - kelp. It's 100% pure & perfect organic, it's got a whole bunch of trace minerals, a couple of natural growth stimulants and other stuff too. To me the best thing it does (and I'm sorry if this gets technical) is to make the plant's cell wall stronger. What that means in every day garden life, is the plants can stand drought AND a light frost much, much better. The other thing I'm getting into is drip irrigation, but that's another story. If ya'll, or anyone else, would like more info, just let me know. I swear, I'll never ever again try to garden without kelp. Peace, poor_old_dad Ps.: did dilligaf ever find any info about herbs?
hhb, have you looked into a kitchen garden and some greywater reuse? Here, we are quite far behind our rain as well (great, we'll get it as snow pfffff) and I find that mulch makes the difference. What moisture we get, the plants get to keep!
Cabbages & brussel sprouts like cool weather. Also lettuce, radish, peas. Plant now, you'll have plenty of time before harvest, Don't forget the garlic, winter over.... By the way, I hava Georgia Okeefe painted skull in my photo gallery, a little like yours. I'll send it if you want.
we currently have greens ns uch planted, i got some peas coming in and i have a late planted batch of sketti squash and a few late sprots of maters i took off of already growing maters. i am going to plant a nice plot of garlic here soon and am going to do the herbs in the greenhouse this winter as well... and attempt a few greenhouse tomatoes fer shitzngigglez.... drumminmamma, just this year we started the outdoor kitchen garden, using grey water for things as well as direct composting into areas that are left unplanted just for said purpose.hopefully in the spring we will see some sorta results from that,,,,, i am also really interested in the humanure thing and am doing more research on that... since we have atleast two utdoor shitters at all times,,, figger we may as well find a use for that too....
yea we have,,, our only water here anyway is cystern,,,, gonna have barrel system for cabin as well and pump from creek when needed as well
