Alrighty, here's the deal (and a bit of backstory). My fiancee and I met orignally five years ago on the 'net. We had a little online fling going on, but since I lived in the states and he in Capetown, SA, it wasn't feasible for the long haul. He remained my best friend through my marriage, having a child, and everything in between. Last October I got divorced and - surprise! - he came over on a work visa. I packed up as soon as I heard about it and moved down here to be with him. Now we're engaged and getting married in September... He speaks perfect English, but Afrikaans is his native language. I've caught on ALOT since we've been together, since we lived with five roommates for our first month - all South Africans. I know the pronunciation and can understand some of what they say, even if it is just a few words here and there and me just assuming I know what I'm talking about (LOL). He'll teach me anything that I want to know, but there are some phrases that I want to just randomly interject with for a bit of surprise. I'll post a few of them here, but some are a little...well...I wouldn't post them in a public forum, anyway So if anyone could help me out, I'd greatly appreciate a PM. Anyway, Here are some of the things I would like translations for, if anyone is up to the task of helping me out. Also, these are mostly directed at our roommate...I just want to surprise my sweety by knowing them...LOL. 1) I can train a dog to do backflips, but I can't train a man to put the toilet seat down. 2) Do your own damned dishes. 3) Do I look like a record label to you? 4) I have the munchies (Don't know if you all have a specific word for marijuana-induced hunger, but that's one I wanna know...LOL) 5) You don't want to know. Also, any curse/slang words you can think of. I know this is an odd request, but I really appreciate it!
Hahaha, I don't speak much afrikaans (because i'm Zimbabwean...and superior in every way) but my Grandmother grew up in Bloemfontein (the most afrikaans place on earth) and can speak it like a native.....so if I speak to her soon and rememeber then maybe I can help Btw with regard to curse words Fok is Fuck Kak (pronounced kuk) is Shit Naaier is Fucker Soutpiel is salt dick and a derogatory term for english speaking south africans implying that they (us) have one foot in africa one in england and a member dangling in the sea
