Just wanted some imput. Our kids both graduate within 3 years and we are thinking that after they have done so that we want to sell everything. Buy and boat and live on it somewhere in the Carribean. Watcha think ? Have we lost our minds ?
No you haven't lost your minds, just make sure that you will be comfortable living in a very close proximity of each other. Are you planning on visiting ports or just stay off by yourself? How big of a boat? Are we invited???
It would just be me and me ol man. We get along well and honestly we do just about everything together. See one you see the other. We share a lot of the same interest. So I think it will work if not I can just throw him overboard. Not sure what size going to pick up a boat trader mag today just to get some ideas. We've talked about island hopping. Stay in one location til we get bored then move on. Even thought about trying to get acoustic gigs and playing bars here and there. Just seems like a good life to me. Yeah you're invited as long as you don't snore.
I've always wanted a boat house. Its a great idea. I think you should go for it and tell us what its like.
i think that is absolutely WONDERFUL! who cares if it seems outlandish or different, thus the basis of it's appeal! go for it! try it out, it's not like if things don't work out you can't just come back. itd be such an adventure, i hope when im older i can live different lifestyles all over the world to see what ive never seen and go where ive never been--you're lucky! theres nothing wrong with maintaining youthful passion for adventure in life you rule, wanna adopt me?
i dont think youre nuts at all! I would love to do that when im older. work for a few years, then take a year off and go around in my boat. however, there are so many things you have to be careful about. in the carribean there are stroms and stuff... you'll have to learn how to navigate it, the different types.. its alot of stuff... but there are many people you can see to help. i love yachts and boats... yachtworld.com is a good way to see the different boats availible. hope that helps.
Nisha, I totally understand about storms as I live on nothing more than a little strip of sand out in the ocean now. Our waters are rough and we get a lot of hurricanes and nor'easters. We'd just keep our eye on the weather and when we see something coming go the other way. Definately want to take a boating course even though I've been around a lot of them in me life. Never can one get to much knowledge.
Wow that is such a radical idea! Me and my family used to live on a boat in Hawaii...it was fun! But we might buy another boat, and i hope we do. Well i think ur idea is wonderful! I would love to jus sail around and not have a permanment living address. u have enough money to do that? i want to do that so bad...im only 16 though right now..ur lucky..go for it!
Yeah the more I talk about it the more I wish we could do it right now. We will in time though. We'll just have to work and save then when we get enough to travel some more or when we get bored just set sail. I'm stoked.
i've got a friend who just bought a small boat (i think it's 30-37 feet, including a short bowsprit) and has lived on it for the past 3 weeks or so. she loves it, because it allows absolute privacy and you can do pretty much whatever you want whenever you want to. but she says it requires CONSTANT maintenance. there's always something that needs to be done. they're always filling cracks, replacing boards, painting it with special boat paint, and finding new problems. it's nothing serious, like they're going to suddenly capsize or something, but it's always on their minds. plus, they have to worry about motor thieves. but the fact that you can, at any time, just set an anchor anywhere and call it your home, must be soooo cool. i'd love to live on a boat. i think you should go for it. good luck!
sounds a lot like maintaining a house in some aspects. Always something to do. Thing is I like the idea of when we get tired of some place we can just go. Nothing holding us down. I really really want to see the world. At least this side of the Atlantic. Want to do the things I never did because I married young and had kids. Still young enough to enjoy myself when they are out of the house. Just think it would be kewl.
I think your idea sounds fantastic. the fact that you are a couple who enjoy each others company makes it that much better. Getting along together would be the most important factor, I think , when choosing such a lifestyle. I am doing something similar myself. My house is now up for sale and when it does sell, I am going to have enough money to live one of my dreams. Im gonna by a big RV and travel around the country for at least 6 months to a year, in search of a place where I think I can be happy. I plan on being as careful as possible with expenses, so I will still have enough money to buy a house wherever I decide to settle down. Not as exotic as your plans, but I still can hardly wait to get out there. good luck on the water and be sure to take along your digital camera.
Snake, That rv can be just as exotic as the boat if you're creative. Know you'll enjoy traveling. My father has an airstream that he takes off in a couple months each year to travel. He luvs it. Got any ideas of where you want to go ? Hippietoad
ive always wanted to go see the dakotas and washington state and oregon, and new mexico, and probobly a few other places that i dont even knw about yet. I have already traveled and seen all the east coast, so Im pretty sure my travels will be everywhere else. im really looking forward to getting out there. I wish i could find a travel partner, be it another dude, one with some auto mechanic skills or a female, with a pretty smile and a roaming spirit
oh, there are books, books on this topic. i, in fact, just read one. i forgot the name; go to the library or book store and look under travel/travel memoirs. the one i read is about a couple from canada sailing the carribean for two years. it'll be really inspiring for you! it's a new book, written by a women; oh, i remember the name: An Embarassment of Mango's. be sure to check it out!
I say you should go for it, but i'm kind of biased because it's like my dream to build a sailboat and live on it... :H anyway, from what i read 30' or so should be good for 2, smaller than that and you don't have much room, larger and it starts to be harder to handle etc. you planning on power or sail? personaly i prefer sail, but thats just me. good luck, i hope works out for you oh yeah, check out the cruising section at boat-links.com, they have tons of links on anything about boats, and theres a lot of good info about living aboard and stuff.
