    Hello all,

In junior high I took sewing classes and created for myself quite a few shirts, pants, dresses etc.
Recently, I feel the desire to start sewing/creating once again.
Problem is, I need a sewing machine. The one I used so many years ago was ancient back then (it only goes forwards and backwards), plus, it's back at my parent's place. I need one of my own.
I can't afford a brand new one, but the bargain finder in the newspaper here has tonnes in it. I just don't know what to look for.
Singer is a good brand no?
What would I for sure need in a sewing machine?

    How about other basics?
    -Sharp scissors
    -Measuring tape
    -Seam ripper
-That thing that measures the size of a hem
    -Fabric Pencil
    -???
I wish I could get a nice big table for sewing on, but I live in an apartment, so it's not really feasible.

    Thanks for your help friends!

I've heard that the modern Singers aren't that good anymore. I have an Elna and although they are a little pricey (mine was about $400 but it has some extra features such as automatic button-hole stitch) they last forever. My mom still has and uses the one her mom got in the mid-'50s! Ah, and mine came with a seam ripper.

Scissors: Gingher! :) Also pricey but are top notch and last an eternity.

I have the most basic model made by Singer. It works just fine, wasn't expensive and does everything I need it to. It's about 5 years old, I think. I haven't had any problems with it.
I never have much money to spend on my sewing habit, either. I just use chalk to mark things and my scissors aren't that great, but they work. You really don't have to spend a ton of money to get something that will work for your needs. Good Luck:)

    Thanks for the replies!
I've never heard of an Elna sewing machine, but I'll definetly look into it.
Chalk is something I never would have thought of!

gingher scissors are the best, and I like using chalk or charcoal to draw on the fabric.

If you are near a Joann fabrics you can sign up for coupons and save 40%. Which come in handy for more expesive notions like the scissors. Ginghers are a must. The cheapies just wear out and get way too dull. I would also try ebay for a machine. Modern singers are junky, but they have some du hard foloowers. You should look on epinions.com for people's descriptions of various machines. It is helpful.

What are Toyota sewing machines like? They have been making looms, fabric machines and general machinery long before the went in for making cars.

If you come across an old Bernina in good condition GET IT! I'm sewing on the same one my mom has had (and used frequently) for over 30 years. There are no plastic parts on this thing..built like a tank.
