Proven reserves is a bit confusing.

The reason proven reserves are increasing, is because of increases in data mining and and geological software, so now were hitting oil at about 6 times the rate we were in 1980.

This is good, and the increases in prices don't have anything to do with less supply, but highly increased demand, and suppliers capping production. (Iran, Venuzela)

But the demand for energy is going to keep growing, and at some point were going to have to realise how short sighted digging halfway across the earth 7 miles down is, even if it is the most efficient way to fill our energy needs now.

There are also other problems associated with oil. Geopolitical instability, greenhouse gasses....

We're not in a oil crunch as such, but we are beggining to approach a window where our transition to other forms of energy will be much rougher if we don't start now.

Oil prices are headed back down to $2 a gallon in the U.S.
That would be about half of the earthwide average price.

Just because there's no shortage of oil now doesn't mean there won't be in the future. Why not invest in alternative energies when we don't have to, rather than scramble like mad when it's the only way left?

yup, there was no shortage at all. the government or somebody in it decided to make the "shortage" if you notice, right around election time, prices fell and we were sudenly bathing in oil.

You know what? The US government are talking total ballocks!

They know there is a problem with Oil, and they know it's only a matter of time.

The earth is amazing the way they make the one thing causing global warming become scares all a sudden. It's also suprising that it's one thing we use every day.

The US government doesn't decide the oil price or how much oil is produced.

And I'm one of the five million who watched loose change. I thought it was totally unconvincing, in fact I laughed out loud a few times.

Um, there may be more oil "reserves", but that doesn't mean more available oil given current technology and costs to retreive it and refine it. The new reserves are mostly oil shales which are very difficult to work, and low yielding, and more dirty.

But those are just minor details for those who would misinform and try to hide the truth.

We're already past Peak Oil. Now we need peak wind, tidal and solar energy plus hydrogen powered, non-polluting vehicles. And soon.

I don't think anyone would say that oil prices have "gotten great". And governments need to be popular between elections too.

What is the "normal" price? Oil is a commodity, prices NORMALLY go through swings, up and down. They don't stay flat at some 'normal' price.

Exactly Mushroom, it's interesting to watch the rise in fall of prices that seem to fit the needs of the Republicans in power. And how the pipeline problem got fixed without the six month increase that had originally been projected....what happened, did God come down and fix that pipeline?

No the "Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries", which produces about 40 per cent of the world’s oil, also influences prices by setting the production levels of its members. Production is monitored and limited to allow for the greatest profits.
