my guy and his mom are getting me a sewing machine for my birthday (finally- i make all my clothes by hand now. tedius..)

anyway- i saw one i like but its Brother brand and i keep being told to only use Singer.

Anyone have any advice on this? How are Brother sewing machines? Should i stick with Singer?

    Thanks!

Actually, I'd go to a store that sells sewing machines and talk to the people there about what's best. There are some that may be able to do more heavy-duty work like being able to go through several layers of something like denim, but if you don't need that sort of feature, it could cost you a lot of extra money. Tell them what work you do and they should be able to tell you which one to get. :)

I would agree w/ Jessica. you should speak to someone who knows about machines. I personally use Pfaff ... But, you need to becareful . the place i go is a pfaff dealer..that's all they sell.. So naturally, they are going tell u they are best. Shop around. Tell them ur specific needs and then they will tell you what machines will work best for you! good luck!

I personally don't like the brother machines, but my sister loves them and hates my old singer. My thought is to get the simplest one--there are fewer things to go wrong. :)

    I love my Husqvarna Viking!!!
I went to the Viking dealer years ago and they showed me about this wonderful machine...They should also let you test sew on the machines too :)

PS: After I bought my D1 machine, I bought a Viking serger and a Viking Freesia for my back up machine.

    Much love and peace,,

DO NOT BUY SINGER!!!!!!!!!!! trust me, my mom has been quilting since she was 7, and she always told me that singers SUCK these days!! they always jam up! how serious about sewing are you? if you do it constantly, and a variety of projects, and would like to do machine embroidery (which is VERY cool!) id go with a husquavana or a rose, but they are VERY pricy. if you just do a project here and there, nothing fancy, there is nothing wrong with a brother. my friend has one and she's just fine with it. (i inherited my moms husquivana, im so lucky ;)) viking is a great brand, i see a lot of ladies at this quilt camp that i go to use one, and you can get them for a good price if they are used. just remember, you must keep it clean, itll last longer and wont jam up as much (but NEVER use one of those tools that blows the dust out, it doesnt blow it out, it blows it in furthur)
whew! sorry this is so long, but i know a LOT about machines. i hope this helps, but remember DONT BUY A SINGER!!!:D

I have been sewing for many many moons. I have also not heard great things about new singers. They are made overseas and seem to be cheaply made. I am a Die hard Janome fan. I have used 5 or 6 of them and loved them all. I would go to a sewing shop and try several brands. I would reallly try to get a feel for all brands . It is a GREAT gift to get and you should try to find something you will like long-term. You could also look at epinions.com It has people's honest opinions about all kinds of merchandise.

at places like jo-ann fabrics, they will let you 'test drive' sewing machines. another great place to get info is privately owned quilt stores-theyre almost always owned by a die-hard quilter, so they would know a lot too!
