I was watching Extreme Makeover yesterday (yes, I was that bored :& ) and one of the people they had getting a makeover was vegan (even though she said she eats seafood, she claimed to be vegan ) Well, her physical trainer asked her if she would start to eat red meats to get the protein she needed to build muscle and lose weight, or something like that. She agreed, which made me sort of mad. I definitely wouldn't eat meat for that, and it confused me because to be vegan she must have had some pretty strong beliefs...but anyway, I thought it was stupid because you don't have to actually eat the animal to get the protein you need. Does anyone know why he might have made a big deal out of it? This is sort of a pointless thread and I'm sorry, but I just wanted some input because I think he was wrong.
Yes, he was wrong, and the reason he made a big deal out of it was lack of education. A lot of people (even sport-related professionals) genuinely don't know that meat isn't the only good source of protein. I know a lot of vegan bodybuilders and powerlifters who would beg to differ.
The whole thing sounds very fictional to me. Never believe anything you see on tv. True many body builders and trainers believe that you need meat to build muscle, but this is not true as there are many athletes that are vegetarian/vegan. I have never, ever heard of someone claiming to be vegan and saying they eat any kind of meat. There are plenty of "vegetarians" that eat meat but I have never come across a vegan. The who thing sounds odd.
That is a stupid show. No matter how someone comes in they want to change as many things as possible about them, even the good things. If you have curly hair, it's gotta be straight. If you have straight hair, it's gotta be curly, etc.
Some people like to give themselves a label just so they can stand out and/or feel better about themselves. She probably did just that. Nothing more than a title. Anyway, I remember reading a story about Tobey Maguire. He was training for the first Spiderman and his trainer was trying to convince him to eat meat so he could gain muscle at a faster rate, but he refused. So instead he just stuffed himself with tofu. If it's important enough for you, you're not going to let anyone convince you otherwise.
I have NEVER watched the show so I can't speak for anything about it. This girl, at age 33, has some MAJOR body image issues. I have no idea how long she has considered herself to be vegan. At 33 it's kind of tough to be aspiring. I suspect the so-called veganism was responsible for her 70# weight loss. That may be why she was not so worried about eating red meat. While I have been MOSTLY vegetarian for the past 25 years, I can honestly say that I was only a vegan for about 9 months. It saddens me when people come to vegetarianism as a fix-it solution to obesity. While addressing problems with being overweight is an excellent step in getting on track for better/improved health, turning into a vegetarian is probably not the answer. Going from unbridled/uncontrolled eating habits to something more disciplined and well-planned is asking for disaster. I don't believe in turning anyone AWAY from vegetarianism; I do however feel that any change in dietary lifestyle is something that should be researched, looked at, experienced and explored before commiting to it with a personal label. I was a vegetarian for two years before I told anyone. http://www.ienhance.com/extreme-makeover/extreme-makeover-s3e4.asp Heather: Heather is a 33-year old aspiring actress from New York City. She is young, but can only dream of looking sexy. She has great flaws, including losing her hair at 25. She never had a boyfriend before. Heather lost 70 pounds. Now she wants to be loved and wants to love someone. She also dreams of being an actress and always avoided roles that called for an "attractive person." She goes to an audition, and after Heather gives her audition performance, the director tells her that she’s not right for the part. However, the director tells Heather that she’s right to be on the television series Extreme Makeover™. Everyone tells her the whole audition was an act and that the director and other actors were in on it. When Heather arrives at the Makeover Mansion, she is greeted by fitness guru, Michael Thurmond who will help her change her shape dramatically. Even though she is a vegan, Heather does agree to follow Michael’s diet plan that involves eating red meat. Then Heather goes to her surgical consultation to meet with her plastic surgeon, Dr. Barbara Hayden. Heather tells the doctor that her chin bothers her. Heather also points out that her breasts are sagging, the volume is fine, but she just wants a prettier shape. Dr. Hayden and Heather talk about breast implants, but Heather does not want large breasts. Dr. Hayden will try to give Heather a good breast shape without implants. They also discuss liposuction, which help improve Heather’s body contour. Heather and Dr. Hayden are going for a more conservative makeover. Next for Heather was a consultation with famous hair surgeon Dr. William Rassman. The doctor tells Heather that her hair thinning is premature and that her hair supply is limited and the demand is high. However Dr. Rassman assures Heather that something can be done and that she is a candidate for a hair transplant. During surgery, 1500 hair follicles were transplanted and the prognosis is good. The hair should grow within eight months. The day of surgery arrives and Dr. Hayden feels connected with Heather. The doctor is worried that the new Heather, after the makeover, won’t adjust to the old Heather, before surgery. Creating a new Heather involved: Chin implant – to model her face. The next procedure for Heather is laser eye surgery from Dr. Robert Maloney. Then later was an appointment with cosmetic dentist Dr. Steven Donia. Heather wants a smile that is still hers, and not the "Hollywood" smile. Dr. Donia was still able to keep the characteristics of Heather’s smile. As far as her dieting and exercise, even though she’s a vegan, Heather has compromised to eating animal protein. She was able to lose 19 pounds and get into better shape. She notices the difference in her tummy. Heather returns to New York and meets with Nicole Miller, a top designer in New York, to help her get dressed for the big reveal. Final touches included hair and makeup. After eight weeks, Heather returned to her friends and family to reveal her new look. She feels sexy and slender for the first time in her life and her self-esteem is through the roof. Everyone was amazed by Heather’s new looks; she was the star of the show. Heather is happy that who she was on the inside did not change with the outside changes. Another surprise came for Heather, she was awarded a full scholarship to an acting academy. Mini-makeover update: On the season premiere, Damen was given a mini-makeover, along with acting classes and a walk-on role on the soap opera "General Hospital." They have to find some sort of "controversy" to keep people's interests on reality shows. The truth is too boring to keep people tuning in. For all we know, she may have not even been vegetarian and was just one of those people who don't eat red meat, and the producers took it from there.
alot of people like to claim titles because they are in fad or make them seam unique among the people they know...alot people claim to be vegan ...sadly there are only a few who truely take its values to heart.....
The wife of a friend of mine started calling herself vegan, because she was uneducated, and couldn't remember the difference between Vegetarian and Vegan. Yes she is a very dense person...but sometimes people call themselves Vegetarian/Vegan without even taking the time to learn what that means. I think some just want the "title".
