Heres my list of perfect pop songs, sorry if its a bit obvious but i think its about right. I don't think it matters if they were actually hits or not just that they should have been. 1.Ever Fallen in Love - The Buzzcocks 2.Teenage Kicks - The Undertones 3.There She goes - The La's 4.I Get Along - The Libertines 5.Sitting On The Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding 6.London Calling - The Clash 7.Ghost Town - The Specials 8.Little Child - The Beatles 9.Unfinished Smpathy - Massive Attack and number ten is a toss up between Jimmy Cliffs Vietnam and draming of you by The Coral. All other lists greatfully recieved and hopefully a full blown row will be a certainty, hehehehehe I love a good row
*grabs nearest fish to hand and raises it* London Calling - The Clash gets a place on my list for its QPR connection Oh and interestingly regarding number 10, Jimmy Cliff was at the Cambridge Folk Festival a couple of weeks ago, and Mr Ryder-Jones of the Coral was staying in my house for the last few days - just left yesterday . I'll give a list of songs I like, and London Calling would be on it, but then i'm not really big on pop per se so much of the list really comes under other categories. The Clash - London Calling Shawn Lee - Happiness Zero 7 - Distractions (quite a lot of their stuff really) Stevie Wonder - Superstition Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity Jeff Beck - Hi Ho Silver Lining Bebel Gilberto - The River Song Basement Jaxx - Do Your Thing Groove Armada - Remember Mono - Life In Mono That's just a few of the songs that I could JUST about call pop, PERHAPS, that I really like - although I've just really picked pop-like examples of songs from other genres that I really like.
Pop-like examples from other genres seems to be the way to go. I always have a hard time creating lists for single songs, the problem I've had here is narrowing the list. There must be tonnes of tunes from the Rat Pack type crooners and just as many from Motown. But anyway: Definitely The Undertones - Teenage Kicks. A grand choice. Van Morrison - Brown Eyed Girl The Rolling Stones - Get Off Of My Cloud The Beach Boys - Wouldn't It Be Nice The Kinks - Waterloo Sunset Elvis Costello - Oliver's Army Steve Harley & The Cockney Rebel - Come Up And See Me (Make Me Smile) Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here Iggy Pop - Lust For Life Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire Jackson 5 - I Want You Back Love - You Set The Scene Oasis - Don't Look Back In Anger Then of course there's The Beatles! Ticket to Ride, All You Need Is Love, I Wanna Hold Your Hand, Help, Penny Lane, Something...This is basically why there's no order, The Beatles could probably get all of a top ten for me.
I think the more obvious it looks the better for this particular subject. At least you have an element of cool with your list, I'm just a couple choices away from the likes of 'Stuck In The Middle With You' and bloody 'Bohemian Rhapsody'! It's certainly the friendliest list I've ever done.
Don't You Want Me by The Human League... infact, as the official 80s music expert, I'd insist that the early to mid 80s were the last time I enjoyed pop before it became indendikit mass market pap... what else could I include?... how about... Come On Eileen by Dexys Midnight Runners & The Emerald Express... The Look of Love (Part One) by ABC... Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel... Don't You (Forget About Me) by Simple Minds... Tainted Love by Soft Cell... Modern Love by David Bowie... The Lovecats by The Cure... Take On Me by A-Ha... It Must Be Love by Madness... There are loads more... These are not the best songs by the artists mentioned above... in many instances, they are probably not the coolest bands or songs to admit to liking... but... these would be the songs that I would sing if I was pissed on a Frdiay night and down the karoake... coz that is what pop should be all about... shared memories and experiences... through the shared language of one song that everyone knows the chorus to... Fly... .
'Don't You (Forget About Me)' is a great choice! There were quite a few poptastic songs in the 80's afterall. No Elvis or Buddy Holly yet
I didn't realy want to repeat any of the ones already mentioned so I came up with these dities..... Goldie Looking Chain - Guns Don't Kill People, Rappers Do Outcast - Roses; Heya The Monkees - I'm a Believer Grand thread.. I'm going to do some more thinkin!!! But my head will hurt.. by hey
Nice additions loops. I'd agree that the whole top ten could be made up of only Kinks and Beatles songs as well. Come on Eileen would be my number twelve
OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD, OH MY GOD OH MY GOD :& Phwoar And he IS even better in the flesh, having stood 2 metres from him an all.
