yeah they suck as well. but maybe they will focus more on the welfare of the American people than just nation building. Put some more jobs out there and that sort of thing.

eventually we're looking at a totalitarian regime anyway so why not go down the smoother path

I think that is the worst possible way of thinking, why not fight totalian government as a whole while you still can, and hopefully we can prevent it from coming here at all, and if it does, we can atleast say we fought till the end to prevent it.

yeah but what can we do at this point to fight it. The only way to avoid a totalitarian state is with a multi party system and there is no way that can happen with the electoral system firmly in place.

    so what do you suggest?

I really think the time of U.S. dominance over world affairs is coming to an end just like Britain before us and France before them. So really is there a threat of totalitarianism if that happens? I think we will become a socialized nation alot like U.K. Much more liberal on many issues.

"...just as bad as the republicans..."

I would agree that democrats are mostly just rightwing pieces of shit, President Clinton being a good example (NAFTA, DOMA, ban on gays in the military, etc.). But I think it's wrong and harmful to suggest that democrats are as dangerous and reckless as republicans. There's just no comparison whatsoever. Name any issue, and in comparison the democrats are mostly harmless.

I think the Dems have a much better shot of taking back the House then the Senate. In the senate, they need 6 seats, because a 50-50 tie would result in Dick Cheney breaking the tie. In order from most likely to least likely, here are the seats that I believe are the most likely Dem pickups.

    Santorum (R-PA)
    Burns (R-MT)
    Dewine (R-OH)
    Chafee (R-RI)
    Talent (R-MO)
    TN - Open
    Allen (R-VA)

The Dems also need to hold on to Robert Menendez's seat in New Jersey.

I would think that Allen-VA would be towards the top of that list.

and the same with TN. Corker has a really low approval rating especially in the area where he's from.

    Regarding: Allen (R-VA)

I can't say I know much about the race, but in the debate I watched on CSPAN last night (I dunno when it was originally held) with his Democratic challenger sickened me. The Democrats really nead to get their shit together. Whether you agreed with the points or not, Allen sounded educated, sounded in touch, sounded reasonable and thoughtful. He addresses the crowd, worked the camera and made good points. Webb faced away from the camera, mealy-mouthed around, made few good points and actually denied time when it was offered him on numerous occasions.

Now I know politics shouldn't be a popularity contest, but when you are going to go toe to toe with your challenger be prepared. Don't stumble around when you opponent has made a blasting point in your direction. Don't say I have nothing to add when your challenger spends his full time reinforcing his case.

I hope Webb can pull it off, but DUDE it is hard to imagine a less charismatic or less eloquent candidate.

Then I got to see good old Clinton on John Stewart. Say what you will about his policies, but that man was good at what he did....

Yeah I just saw the webb/allen debate on meet the press this past weekend. after that I dont think webb stands a chance. I wouldnt vote for him. But the Casey/Santorum (PA) debate is a different story. I really enjoyed watching santorum getting torn apart. Not because he's republican but because he's a Bush ally
