I recently moved to a new school and am taking a computer applications class.

I was horrified to see that the teacher has us print out even the simplest, most ridiculous things (one sentence on one piece of paper, nonsense words, etc).

None of these papers are graded, and better yet, I have seen the teacher throwing the papers in the garbage rather than recycling.

I noticed that this couldn't be her fault, however, due to the fact that the school has no recycle bins whatsoever.

Any suggestions about what I can do about this?

The lack of bins is easier to cure than a teacher's habits.

I doubt that you will get the teacher to green his teaching methods.

But a request that recycling bins be avaliable on campus might be met. Especially if the petition carried both student and parent names.

Once he's used to tossing paper into a recycling bin, your teacher might be persuaded to change his paper wasting habits.

I've noticed that at my school as well. There is nowhere on campus a solitary recyling bin. It really sucks to see how much is just thrown in the trash. Especially since the dump is only a few blocks away... So we get to watch it fill up year after year.

I hadn't thought about a petition. I've just been recyling my stuff like crazy and pushing my roomies to do the same... I'll look into it...

I'm sure there's a way to make that happen?

Yeah, they said that the computer age was gonna REDUCE the amount of paper that was consumed...what ever happened to that?

Start a recycling program yourself! Contact the recycling place in your town (or a nearby town) and see if they will provide service to the school...start a club and do it yourselves...

    There are lots of options.

That was happening a few years ago in my middle school so I wrote to the principal about what was going on and some simple ways to fix it and now they've got a pretty big recycling programme going on there! :)

Surely, working on a computer should save paper. They havent got USB memory sticks, compact discs and floppy disks for no reason.

Yep, the proactive approach would be to start waking these teachers and schools in general to start recycling... And for that, you mave have to go to your local government for help.. Which is good because what you do won't just affect your school but all the schools in your area....

There's always something you can do to solve a problem...even a little step is a step in the right direction. Nothing will change on its own...people need to take action in order to make changes...and good thing the OP came here...because people gave him/her some awesome suggestions.

My 10 year old asks them at school all the time why arent they recycling! When they will give them to her, she brings cardboard boxes home and we take them to the recycling place, less than a mile from the school. I don't tell her that compared to the styrofoam trays and plastic forks they use everyday in the cafeteria, the cardboard boxes are nothing. I know for a fact the school had plastic washable trays and a dishwasher.

And at the middle school foot ball field we see cans full of recyclable plastic bottles. Why are people so lazy?

I have written (no response yet) to the extension agent for the county to try educate the students about recycling, hoping the students can help pressure the school into doing it. One child can't make much headway, but many voices.....
Next, I will write to the county newspaper- editorial and see if they will print my letter- urging residents and schools to recycle.

I already take a bin of plastic and aluminum from work every week to recycle.

Our rural schools are very low on funding so if a recycling program would cost any money, they wouldnt do it.

Oh has been thinking about the huge amount of paper used for exam papers, i've already contacted the main exams boards about it and they all said that the paper was from sustainable forests and they couldn't use recycled paper cause it messed up the scanners.

Yeah they never answered half my questions, like where it was from and stuff like that. Oh but they did say that exams would be done all on computers soonish.

Find a well written article online on the topic of the increasing depletion of our natural resources and what everyone can do to prevent it... print that out... and hand it to your teacher.

I've never heard of a school using styrofoam trays and plastic forks before. My school had trays with those little compartments for food and a dishwasher as well... And this was just two years ago, and I know for a fact they still use them...

They started using them a couple of years ago, at first, just on early dismissal days, or some other reason (for their convenience). Now that's all they use.
