Hi all, I'm thinking of getting dreads pretty soon so I've had a look around my area for hairdressers who do it. I found a place who seem pretty good and well recommended, so I gave them a call and asked about their methods. They told me that they backcomb then twist and use a gel. I was under the impression that gel and so on is best avoided, or is that after they're matured? If it helps I have very curly caucasion hair. Oh yea - I live near Cambridge in the UK, so if anyone knows of a good place to go any advice would be apreciated.
Twisting makes the hair look like dreads, but they aren't dreads....dreads are knots... Personally, I wouldn't waste my money on stuff like that. Doing it naturally costs NOTHING...backcombing is something you can do at home as well. Just my opinion.
If you go natural, your hair would kont up faster. Also you might get that cool looking "youthful" dreads that are wavie .. Also it matters what kind of dreads you want. If you want dreads, just to impress your firends with, then go for the saloon. If you made a decision that you want dreads, because you like them so much that you want to get them. Then I'll say you should go natural. Another thing is if you want to "try them out first", you can go salon and then after that (if you liked how you looked) go for the concret and wait it untel it hardens...
It depends on the effect that you want for your locks. If you want them to remain even, I would recommend sectioning them. If you want them to have different lengths and widths, than I would recommend letting your hair section itself. Also, there are many things to consider. Are you a professional? Are you a student? If you are a professional, than I would recommend sectioning and backcombing. Once they are formed, you can always let natural methods take over. Gel is best avoided, although a little wax used sparingly (I know I'm going to get jumped for this) might not be a bad idea at the beginning. I sectioned and backcombed mine, and because I am trying to maintain a quasi-professional image, I used some wax. It does wash out with hot water, if you get the right kind. Which kind is the right kind? Up to you, really, but my friends in South Carolina, US have a website called www.dreadheadhq.com You don't need everything on this site, by far, but if you're interested in a more cosmetic appearance (as it sounds with your salon-venturing) than I would sincerely recommend it. Natural is great, if your professional life can survive it.
best method..only method as far as i'm concerned..patience really it doesnt take much, ..a good freind from here wanted dreads sobad.. when she went tothe gatherintg with me shed asked a dozen people if they'd dread her hair (backcomb or whatever) but noone got around toit..instead she just forgot to comb her hair for a couple weeks& had like 6 or so really nice dreads formed already...withno effort..&no expence at all 1 other sister fromhere, i forget who..went toa salon..if u search u can find the results..it wasn't pretty..she wasted alotta $ onit & it wasn't even a day before she hadta rip em apart & start over...naturaly dreads arent made, dreads are just the wayyour hair is naturaly meant to be...only wayto get em is let em happen thats my opinion anyway
salons are wastes of money. dreads were never ment to be professionally done in a salon and dreads were never ment to be expensive haha. ive head at a salon its a couple hundo just to get "dreads" (twists held together by gel, do they even use wax?.) you want to use non-residual (sp?) products on ur hair, not gel. thats not wat u want man. just dont comb ur hair and let it take its natural course, by dreadin itself. ur hair will know wat to do, just let it take its time. i think i can speak for everyone when i say patience is key, u will have dreads eventually. peace~
Don't go to a solon.. if you do want them backcombed, there are lots of people who can do it too for less money and without any wax or gel.
the results you would get from a salon are horrible, they just look bizzarre,&if they use wax, they glop it on so thick that way ya actualy would never really have true dreads, just a waxy sticky mess i'm constantly finding new dreads forming inthe shorter hairs between dreads, prettymuch everytime i wash themifind new lil babies just wash your hair, but use a nonbuilduptype natural soap, ya can use dr bronners even, or i've been using knottyboy lately.. just wash it bout once a week...& just shake it out & letit doits thing as it starts to clumptho, be sure j keep seperating the clumps into individual dreads sou dont get too many growing together or u could actualy end up withjust 1 realthick 1...(unless ya dont mind that..then go for it)
