Recently, I've been cleaning up my life (fasting, selling things I dont need, and now geting rid of music that isnt beneficial).

Ive gotten rid of all my rap, as I found personally it influences me in the wrong ways. I've gotten rid of a lot of the hard rock, etc etc.

Can anyone recommend some good music?

    I listen to:

    Maroon5
    Beatles
    Outkast
    Beastie Boys
    Beethoven
    Orbital
    70s soft rock

I like soft flowing, happy music. I like the grateful dead a lot too.

    Any advice greatly appreciated :)

soft, flowy, music?? Well, hmmm... yeah I guess the 70s pop will do it for you. I have this ultimate 70s collection, has a hundreds of 70s pop/soft rock songs, sounds like you'd like it.

The Beatles are grand, stick with them and you won't go wrong. :)

hmmm... I'll get back to you when i think of some more happy music. I know I have a bunch of it in there but it isn't coming to me right now.

Check out John Cale... it sounds like something you might like. Also try Nick Drake and Syd Barrett.

I think you'd really dig the Flaming Lips, particularly their later, softer and more proggy incarnation - albums like the Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. Very symphonic, flowy stuff.

Yes is another positive-sounding band... others fail to come to mind at the moment...

Well, no matter what, I'd drop the Maroon 5 if you can... that's painfully bad stuff there. ;) Or, at least it's not my kind of music.

Well....you didnt mention Bjork in the list of people you listen to...so...Bjork.:)
Also, Natalie Merchant makes great music. Those two women top my list.

Heh I hear ya. I never liked their singer's voice. My old roommate played lots of Maroon 5, that would get tiresome. But then, he never relished my marathons of Syd Barrett[IMG]

He should have relished them! ;) But, I understand. My father thinks Syd Barrett is just horrible... however, he listens to modern country, so he really doesn't have much room to talk. :p

Also, Skelter, you think the Doors would be that good for him? Maybe some of their music, but most seems like it wouldn't fit with what he's looking for. I mean, he probably wouldn't want to listen to "The End," "When the Music's Over," or even "Back Door Man." He might like "The Crystal Ship" though.

He likes so many different genres, so i thought maybe he'll like the doors as well. They're not too experimental.

Is modern country ALL he listens to?

Orbital?! Fantastic :sunglasse I think this is the first time I've seen them pop up outside one of my own posts.

With Orbital in mind, I'd suggest....

    Aphex Twin
    Leftfield
    Underworld
    Massive Attack
    Death In Vegas
    Mum

    Oh and Mozart of course.

If you're a Beethoven fan you can't go wrong with a bit of Mozza.
Plus with you cleaning your life as you say, it's pretty widely accepted that Mozart made the most calming music of all time. Used even to chill babies in the womb :)

No, he also likes blues as well. He likes B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and I got him into John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton.

Soft and positive? Perhaps you should give Robert Wyatt's "Rock Bottom" a try. This is really soft, beautiful music, although maybe a little weird if you compare it with some of the bands on your list. But I think its really hard to find music better than this, no matter how hard you try.
