Hokay, I got meself a bit o' a question fer ye:

A lot of people here claim that they are 'hippies', but I see some contradictions.
I don't want to point fingers; let's just make it clear that I am not trying to offend anyone and that I'm just msaking general statements.

Some people on this site are very angry and lack respect for other's opinions.
I thought that part of being a 'hippie' is love, respect, peace, happiness, tranquility, ect. Am I wrong?

'Hippies' were also one with nature. They liked everything to be natural. (hence why they didn't shave or wear brand named clothing and such.)
A lot of people here talk about styling their hair and such with products that are synthetic and cause cancer. Hmmmm....Contradiction maybe? What's so natural about putting mouss in your hair, dying it, or straightening it everyday with irons or styling gels? Something just isn't right with that.

Some people here are against many things and I thought that 'hippies' are supposed to be very liberal people. Don't get me wrong, everyone has to be against something, but sometimes you just have to let things go.

I hope I made a point. I'm sure some of you must agree with my statement.
I guess I'm just saying this because I'm a naturalist, and I like the world to be full of love and peace. I don't like fighting or offending other people. But I thought that perhaps if I typed this out that more people would have a better understanding on this topic and what it's all about.

What exactly makes these people who wear styling products and offend people 'hippies'?

I'm just wondering what everyone's opinions and reasonings are begind this.

    Peace and love,
    ~Sway

Your post didn't anger me at all, because I sometimes see those people that you're talking about [IMG]

The first two points don't have anything to do with me because I'm very accepting and live my life as naturally as possible (well, almost haha) but the third point when you mentioned being against a lot of stuff, I don't really agree with you.

I sometimes feel like I'm against way too many things, but I don't think it really goes against any hippie mentality-- I guess you could call me a crazy animal rights person, and I'm vegan, so the only things I'm against are pretty much things that exploit animals. But since that covers a wide range of topics, it might seem like I'm against everything. I'm also not at all the biggest fan of the government, but that's not nearly as extreme. I try to stick to one major thing. Maybe that's how everyone is here, and since their one topic covers a broad range of topics also, they seem to hate more than they actually do? [IMG]

I reread that and it didn't make the sense that I wanted it to, so I'll try to generalize-

The things that people dislike are usually what go against liberal ideas. Since there are so many things in our society that go against liberal values, there's a lot of things to not like. So I still believe that by disliking many things, you can maintain a liberal attitude because it's not about how many things you dislike, it's about what those things are.

But anyway, I agree with you on the first two topics. I don't like reading so many posts of people being rude and disrespectful. If that's what I wanted, I would've gone to a different board. But it is a free speech forum so I guess there's nothing I canr eally do. I don't think I see many of the hair-dyers and mousse-users here though.

I hope that made some sense [IMG]

you can be against things and be civil about it, i think thats what sway is trying to say, (i may be wrong)the thing that puts me off is all of the childish namecalling i see on some of these posts. theres no need for it, and it makes the namecaller look pathetic. and i think sometimes people type when theyre in a bad mood and are just looking for a fight (im guilty of doing that on one occasion, ill admit) we all have bad days, i tend to stay away from people when im out of sorts, for their sake!
    peace

I am not a hippie. I am a grateful dead fan that enjoys rainbow gatherings.

Thank you, Lucyinthesky. That is exactly what I meant. It's normal to be against things. (Hell, I just sent a long message about pro-choice to this guy who sent a big bulletin on Myspace saying that abortion is wrong and making a big deal about it, blah blah blah.) But yes, I did mean in a civilised manner. And if your guys don't see the people who style their hiar and what-not go to the hip polls and go to what is your hair like, or something or another like that.

    Peace

Part of the problem is this is a public forum so anyone can come in and say anything they want (they'll get banned... evenutally) I was in the middle of a good discussion when a pro-Hezzbolah guy took over the conversation. Now, I don't have Amerikkkan flags all over my car (or jesus fish) but this guy was convinced that we were all wrong as long as we didn't agree with him on every little point. That wrecked a good converstaion and yes, he was exercising his free speech but it kinda stepped on ours.

It would be great if everyone thought like us, peace and love and freedom (and the beatles and the dead) but they don't and that's what makes the world go around.

This is a great site for stoners, dead heads, phish heads, old hippies, young hippies, courious almost-hippies but that doesn't mean we all have to wear our hemp pants uniform and line up for the patchouli showers. We all have different ideas about how to go about it, what it is, and where it's at

I have to get in one dig too...

You can't complain about people not being one with nature on a computer!!!

OK, I only say it coz I love and respect you and hope you have peace, happiness, and tranquility! Maybe someday we will find our way to nirvana, but for now we are all human and we will disagree, and fight and make up and hug.

    Peace and love all
