I know it sounds wierd, but I might get my hair colored later, and its hard to color it when its twisted. So i might untwist it, color it, and retwist it a little better. since this was the first attempt its kinda shoddy in some places. But hey, you all would be proud. No wax or anything! Just twisting and rubber bands

Hey, Don't mean to burst your bubble mate, but dreadlocks are your hair knotting together not you twisting sections and putting rubber bands on them. Sorry about the negative post, I just thought it was necessary. I havent really hard much about this way of getting dreadlocks... Considering I'm trying to go natural. But goodluck none the less.

well, actualy that is 1 way to doa sorta controlled natural dreading proccess, the rubber bands will hold the ends in place & force the dreads to start to form & dread up from there, however, the rubberbands will eventualy be consumed bythe dread, then dryrot inthem & you'll always have lil bits of rubber trapped in the end, a better method if you choose to gothat route is beads or hair wraps
you can take a loop of thread, feed it through a bead, then put the hair througfh the loop & pull it throughthe bead, forcing the bead up untill it just sticks
the dread will start forming inside the bead & slowly knot in both directions
the bead will either eventualy be permenamtly in the dread..or will one day fall out
you can also do a temp type hair wrap, either on the entire hairs uwant to dread, or just on the bottom inch or so, &the dread will dforminside the wrap & grow towards the scalp
both are technicaly natural dreading but with a bit more control over how the dreads form

either way you will have to ocasionaly seperate the dreads at the bases sothey dont grow together too much

Take out the bands and either re-start natural or backcomb them...

I think this method only works on afro hair :s You'd better take out everything and start natural or just backcomb.. I think this will take more time then going natural..

My hair IS afro hair :p which is why it was done thwe way it was done. I know normally you dont use bands and the normal way is by backcombing, but I tried and it just didnt work. Ill take hte bands out after about a week ad hopefully the hair will have grown together for the most part by then. It not, il band them back up.

I truly don't mean to sound bitchy, but from the picture of which you gave the link, you look like you have silky caucasian hair. JMHO.

Well, it looks that way because we spent about an hour blowdrying it straight and using a straight iron on it before working with the hair, otherwise it would have made a hard job even more impossible.

Here is what my hair did look like a few days ago: ((This is natural, not messed with at all, no perms, no nothing))

    www.arcticwolfhowls.com/private/DSC00840.jpg

And ill explain the full process i went through.

Step one: Straighten and ease hair so its good to work with
    Step two: Seperate layers
Step three: Grid off into sections
Step four: Take a lock from a section, twist it as tight as possible, and place arubber band at the base of the lock, as close to scalp as possible.
Steo five: Once every lock has been twisted and banded, twist them some more ad place a band on the tip to secure in place.

I tried to backcomb, but it just didnt work. I dont know if its my hair texture.. or if i did it wrong, or if it just hates against me, but it was a terrible frizzy mess. So I got the bright idea to try it this way.

I figure let it sit for a few days with the bands on the tips, then take them off and see how it looks. If they fall apart, i'll know i either have to keep the bands on longer, or trying something else. Im also going to be coloring my hair, so these are kinda temporary till after the coloring is done, then its repeate everything and make it look better, since i wont be taking them out after i get the color done.

    Peace,
    Vutall

Maybe someone more knowledgable can correct me if I'm wrong, but your hair looked perfect for natural dreading to begin with. Again, just my opinion (I promise I'm not bitchy!)

I dont mind =) And yes, no doubt it was pretty awsome for natural dreading, but there was two problems.

One, i have a REALLY bad habbit of pulling my hair appart when it was like that, and two, my cat has an odd effixiation with licking my hair, and it would also pull out all the tangels. (although he doesnt know what to do now that my hair is twisted and banded.. he just kinda leaves it alone lol))

Oh, and I guess there was a third, is my mother was yelling at me to do something with my hair because she couldnt stand the huge fuzz ball, so I told her i would try and kickstart dreading it, and she likes it, so =S I might try to back-comb it again, since in a few days I take all of this out anyways to get it colored. ((I just wanted the hair to get used to being in this style. Youd understand if you had my hair lol. Its HELL >.>))

Also the ay I did it makes it so they appear to be dreads pretty early on, so I can have some decent Senior Pictures. After all that maybe ill try just natural again, but who knows. Im prety happy with the results so far with the twisting and banding. Took out a few of the tip bands today and they hld together alright.. But that also might be because when ever i had free time id roll and twist them lol

hellyea iagree, the wayyour hair was tobegin with looked like it would dread naturaly veryvery quickly, all that proccessing you went through just tookyou further away from dreads & probly dammaged your hair..
the wayyour hair was to startoff id guess youd have the beginnings of dreads in a week if u just stopped combing it

It looks like you made whole bunch of tiny pony tails... Just dont comb you hair... One step, its easy to follow, and you dont really have to do anything except seperate... Well two steps, but you know what i mean... Come back in a month or 5 ... Then youll probably have dreads..

i suppose if its hair he might know best how to do it, even tho most of us have done our dreads and it may have worked similarly to other people's methods. but for the most part (and i know i do not know everyone here) the caucasian people here who have dreaded their hair began with 'non-afro' hair. so maybe it could be a different process to dread his hair. who knows. but even if it is the wrong method to dread his hair, i know i didn't start dreading mine the correct way, but i learned how, and i'm sure he will if this is not the correct way.

Leave it alone! I mean, take it out, and then leave it alone! My hair was soooo much like yours before I let it dread, and it really did look like dreads for me within two weeks of extremely half-assed sectioning and even more half-assed backcombing. I had the same problem even with playing with/pulling apart my hair, and just sort of modified that habit, to start rolling them instead. Seriously. Take that shit out, give it some time for your hair to relax back toward normal, and you'll have dreads before you know it! :)

First off, ignore hillbilly. He's a proven ass.

Finally, banding is not always a bad idea, you just have to stay conscious of the bands getting sucked into your locks. I have bands only at my roots right now, but for the first month of my locks' lives, I had bands at the tips to try and keep them rounded. It worked wonderfully, but I made sure to go through and examine them each after each time I took a shower.

Really, it's up to you, man, and good luck! The sectioning is not a bad idea, just stay conscious of where the bands are, and make sure you don't lose them in your hair (which is very, very, very bad. So bad that some are convinced it isn't worth them in the first place)

The twisting, however... on my first set of locks, I tried twisting one of them, and after two years it was.... twisted hair! It never locked up. I wound up just covering the whole thing with beads, which I could get away with because I wasn't trying to prepare for a professional existence.

Good luck, knotty brother, and keep us posted!
