my plants are about 4 weeks into flowering and the fan leafs are blocking the lower budding sites from the light. if i remove them will this reduce yield by much? i really need to do something about them...any ideas? thanks Peace Out SP
I'm not 100% certain, but as far as I am aware it is just the leaves that absorb the light energy to grow bud, not the bud it'self. So to remove them could be counter productive.
Cannabis does not flower effectively unless the flowers or "buds" are exposed to a relatively intense light field,
I disagree with Superpimp but I also think removing a few selected upper fan leaves has merit. Some light should penetrate but don't overdo it. Remove low leaves that look unhealthy but keep leaves that are getting good light. Sometimes I remove just one or two fan leaves in the upper area for more light penetration. I suggest you try to follow your own intuitions and see the results. To many removed will harm yields. Actually in late flowering plants don't need as much light as when they are gaining budweight so late in flowering buds do mature without intense light. BOG
I tend to leave all the fan leaves on that I can. The fan leaves are generating energy for the bud production. If you need to take a few off to let light get down to the lower buds, just take the ones that you need to remove and leave the rest. Remember that the plant gets it's vigor and energy to flower from the photosynthesis that goes on in the leaves. Nowadays I tend to grow for tops, and to hell with the bottoms. A good thick canopy is where it's at IMHO. Peace...
