Wotcher folks...

Ok, the insomnia is running strong tonight so I decided to bite the bullet and make one of these thingy threads so you can probe me in any way you fancy :-o Have been lurking around here for a little while and it seems nice, interesting people and all that but enough about you lets get self centred here...

So I'm Jez from Brighton, for the past three years I have been doing work with a community arts organisation and production work on festivals and ethically focused events around the country. Recently I have been doing less work with them as I'm in a bit of grey period at the mo and just a little disillusioned with my life situation. But it's not really that bad, that sounded a little melodramatic.

I'm a bit of a fiend for a party which has it's pros and cons. The cons namely being waking up in places where I haven't a clue where I am (I have a habit of falling asleep in bizarre places hehe many many stories) and stinking headaches. I probably drink too much, probably smoke too much weed (although not loads recently, hence the insomnia), don't live the healthiest lifestyle but am quite careful with what I eat, fresh food, organic stuff and the like (ironic when I'm happy to fill myself up with nasty drugs cooked up in dodgy eastern european labs).

I don't have loads of hobbies to speak of but there's a few things I am passionate about. Music is my main love and my tastes are varied, I DJ quite a lot of different styles depending on the gig. One night I'll be playing some banging psychedelic trance or acid techno and the next night I'll be playing jazz, funk and soul, the evenings after that I'll be playing anything from klezmer to african and latin music through to microhouse, synth pop and reggae. Mixed bag basically. I dabble in making some music electronically alone and with friends as well as having a jam or a good old singsong now and then. I also organise parties with friends and our ethos is something for everyone, so you might not like all the music in the night but there will be something you'd like. We'll have punk bands playing next to house dj's and the like, keeping it eclectic and mashed up.

I like to travel and have to get away every few months, if only for a couple of days because this country drives me absolutely crazy hehe. I want to live in europe for a while, either Berlin or Barcelona. They're pretty different places but I like them both equally and so it's hard to decide. I think I might retire to rural cornwall later in life as it's beautiful down that way and there's an energy I haven't felt elsewhere in the country. Oh yeah, and they've got absolutely hilarious accents, I love it, I've found myself in tears down that way before just from listening to people speak (this is a compliment and not an insult btw you cornish folk).

I'm single currently but I have a cat that loves me so it doesn't really bother me too much hehe.

Um I can't really think of much more to write now as I am feeling rather braindead at this hour of the morning and the beer has been steadily flowing all night. Soooooo, fire away, question me blah blah blah something like that.

No, unfortunately not. But I did go to school with a son of a Leveller. Not sure which one though as I was never a massive fan but some of the older tunes I've heard are wicked. *goes off to dig out cassette of levelling the land*

Oooh hard one. It's so easy to criticise where you are right now as if where you want to be is utopic and doesn't have the same problems or similar. I think at the moment what gets my goat is the database state, the loss of liberties in the name of 'security' and the rabid sensationalism in the media and in general surrounding big bad scary terrorists lurking on every corner.

 

*Sigh* So I open myself up for interrogation and no-one wants to quiz me?

No, not all the time. Much of the art/music I create is full of painstakingly repetitive tasks and involves hours of mind numbing things but it's something to concentrate on I suppose. Maybe I was just bored this morning as I only slept a couple of hours last night and had nowt to focus on, needed a little stimulation or something...

I'm just a bit cynical and apathetic at the minute. Not unhappy, still smiling but feeling a little empty. I think it's the end of summer blues and the fact I haven't been away since January, which as I mentioned earlier does have a strange effect on my mental health. I was supposed to go to Voov Experience in Germany in August but the day before we were leaving I lost my passport. Gutted. Brighton is a cool place but at the same time it's quite easy to sink into a depression here and do nothing. Also my best mate has been away for a few months working in Europe, he wanted me to go with him and I have passport issues and hardly any cash so it looks like that won't be happening for some time. But as I say, I'm just being melodramatic to be honest, dwelling on the negative when there is still plenty to be happy about in my life

Thank you. I'm not really a big film watcher in all honesty but yes, lost Highway is a classic. To tell the truth that picture makes me laugh everytime I see it (don't know why though hehe) and that's why I chose it, I'm not obsessed with the film or anything. I liked Wild at Heart, Blue Velvet, Eraserhead, all the Lynch classics.

Cliched choice but I think it has to be Withnail and I. One of the most genius works ever put on celluloid and I'm quite a big fan of Richard E. anyway but just all round classic film. One of my best memories of watching was when I was seeing this very sweet Israeli girl and all her friends came round and we decided to put it on. I was in hysterics the whole way through the film whilst none of them could understand a word because the accents and the language used were too English for them. I suppose I was probably laughing as much at them as I was at the movie hehe.

 

If your best friend's hand was chained to a bomb which was about to explode, do you think you could hack his arm off to save his life?

 

I'd give it a go if that was what he wanted. What tools would I have to hand?

 

I'm asking the questions What tool would you ideally use to hack your best friend's arm off?

Would you draw the line at:
1/ an axe
2/ a bread knife
3/ a runcible spoon

 

I'd go for the order you put things in. I think firstly, the axe would probably be cleanest but would take a bit of force. Oh I don't know it's a horrible question. I'm cringing right now thinking of his face whilst trying to hack off his arm with a bread knife, a picture I disturbingly can't get out of my head. Stop it.

I'm a member of the British National Party and have some great ideas for the next four years as I am standing for Brighton in the local elections in May.

No, I'm a lefty libertarian kinda guy. I still retain some anarchistic tendencies but don't agree with the ideology as a whole (never completely did though). I think all in all I'm a humanist but at the minute as the decline pisses me off more and more I'm becoming apathetic due to frustration, which isn't the way to solve things I know.

Hello! Welcome and all that!

A good place to start would be the Cowley Club on London Road, about 10 doors down from sainsburys. They do wicked cheap vegan food and cheap tea. Sometimes you're not just being fed wholesome food though, as some people like to force radical leftisms down your throat at the same time but most people are real nice. It's run by volunteers and all money raised from food/drink/books etc goes to funding the club and other social projects in Brighton. In the evening it becomes the 12 London Road social club and they serve alcohol and have bands etc on. Unfortunately you need to go with a member or to qualify for membership be put forward by an existing member but if you hang around long enough this won't be hard. The mixture of people in there is nice and it's the most active underground left leaning place in Brighton so I'd recommend it as there aren't many others.

You could also come to the Eco Centre where I work, opposite Brighton Station and downstairs in the Peace and Environment Centre they are always looking for volunteers, even if it's just an hour or two a week. From there you will be able to choose which projects you want to get involved in and progress to similar things. The people there are all lovely and you will meet likeminded folk for sure.

My favourite place in Brighton is a hard one as I've lived here for most of my life and have many different places for different moods. In no particular order places I'm keen on are: The West Pier, Sydney Street to Bond Street for people watching, Preston Park secret garden (behind the manor shhh! secret!), Stanmer Park, Kemp Town is nice for cafes (and gay bars hehe!). Cool pubs are The Evening Star, Surrey Street right near the peace centre which doesn't sell commercial beer brands and has only one lager, its homebrew. It has something like 200 beers there! The Earth and Stars on Church street is good too. Cobblers Thumb at Preston Circus are doing a good dub/reggae night on thursdays. The best club in my opinion is The Volks, it's dirty, dingy, smelly and the floor is usually covered in beer and broken glass but they have good psytrance, tekno, reggae, breaks and dnb nights at a reasonable price. Drinks aren't too expensive and door staff are generally cool. Check out Concorde 2 for bigger bands and DJ's of all sorts. I don't know what you're into so I can't recommend loads of clubs or bars you know.

Fraid not. It was a silly name I picked out of the air whilst signing up, doesn't mean anything. I don't know what to believe. There's no conclusive proof either way so I'm content to do little things that make me feel positive and keep my faith in humanity going, and not having to devote my life to any particular set of rules. My outlook changes all the time depending on my mood hehe...

 

And since you can't prove a negative, I see no reason to believe in God personally.
