this sucks... I have every single symptom of an underactive thyroid disease. Every woman on my mother's side of the family has it and it usually pops up after giving birth. I went to the doctor and they can't find it yet. My MIL had to wait 3 yrs with the symptoms before they told her she could go on medication to regulate it. I don't think I can go through this... I'm going absolutely crazy. I gained close to 20 pounds in two weeks. My diet didn't change... I mainly eat fresh foods like veggies and fruit with the exception of a lean meat every once in a while. Plus I do stay active through the day... I now can't do anything without having to nap 3 times a day. I cleaned the kitchen up after breakfast the other morning and got so tired I felt like I was going to pass out. I've had my stupid period for 39 days now... My breast milk doesn't feel as abundant. I'm a complete mess. There is just so much more too. My MIL suggested I take a bunch of vitamins that I would need to stop BF for. I don't know what to do. I feel horrible like I'm jipping riley of the nutrients she needs but I don't know if my body is even producing them anymore. Does the thyroid being messed up effect your BM? Does any1 here have a thyroid disease and can offer me some advice? On one hand I'd love to feel normal and beable to keep up with the kids again but then again would me stop BFing with her being 6m old be harmful to her? I really hate formula. I don't know if maybe I'm making too big of a deal of this.
My thyroid hormone is on the lower end of production, so I have a hard time managing my weight, and I am kind of slow. But according to the blood-tests they have done two years and more then 6 years ago, it's only off a little. I took medication for a while, but it didn't do anything, so I try managing it without. If there's too little of the hormones in your body, they should be able to determine it right away. If your body is already showing symthoms of lack, there will be too little of the appropriate hormone in your blood. what you really should check, is the your iodine intake. lack of thyroid hormones can be caused by low iodine intake, which -as far as I know- should be higher for pregnant and Bfing moms. Eat seafish, and if you're veggie, there are some seaweeds that you can eat. Also buy salt that is either prepared with iodine, or seasalt. Good luck at finding out your problem!!
I have a thyroid disease. It started out as hyperactive and was to the verge of killing me. They had to kill my thyroid and now I take hormones to supplement what my body no longer produces. I have heard of having the symptoms without it showing up on the tests but that does not make sense to me. I am not a doctor though. Have you had your iron levels checked? If your iron is too low it will make you very sleepy. If that is not the case then I have seen supplements at health food stores for hypothyroidism. I don't know how they work but if your's is not severe enough to show up on tests then I guess it would be worth checking into.
Take angstrom minerals(if you have money) iodine and zinc... or eat seaweed, especially kelp, which has a higher concentration of iodine. Also stop(if you do) eating safflower, sunflower, soybean and canola oils, and any soybean products or packaged foods whatsoever. Eat coconut oil, which is very good for the thyroid, and hemp oil. I don't know about maca, while you're breastfeeding, but if you were not that'd also help... may have to research that... And by the way... sorry, that sounds really horrible.
http://www.meminerals.com/catalog/Recommended.asp?ID=Thy103 A link to the angstrom minerals... also you're milk should be fine. If you can afford the minerals I'd do that... the minerals you have are going into your breastmilk, not to you, that is why you need them for yourself as well... the baby is getting what it needs.
Not the quality of the milk, occasionally the Quantity, though. As long as Riley is GROWING properly, you and he are OK in that department. Get a second opinon, see a doctor who specializes in glandualar disorders, Don't take "there's nothing wrong" for an answer. Have you had all FOUR thyroid tests done? There is a T3, a T4, and two others, all NEED to be done to determine whether there is a problem, Some doctors only do one test and tell you "It was a little low, but not enough for medication." Even a little low is enough for meds. All the meds do is to REPLACE what your body needs anyway, so the meds will NOT effect your milk at all. An endocrinologist is best, but a good Internist, who will listen to you can also order the tests and interpret them. Don't wait, see someone, preferable at a large University Teaching Hospital immediately. I hope you feel better. As long as your supply is OK, you are not harming the baby. Keep nursing. But YOU need the treatment, as you sound miserable. Thyroid disease can also cause depression, (that responds a LOT better to Thyroxine, than to antidepressants) and that can add to the problem of feeling awful. If your doc won't help you see an other doc.
WHAT? What vitamins do you have to stop breastfeeding for? Is your MIL a Lactation Consultant? Often, especially quacky cures will tell you not to breastfeed, because they don't want to get sued. I can't THINK of a single vitamin that requires weanaing. What IS this stuff? Really, the best solution is to replace the missing component, which would be Thyroxine, most likely. Please, see a good doctor. Make sure all the correct tests were done, and then, if you don't have Hypothyroid, a good doctor won't just give up, he or she will investigate until they find out what the problem is. AFAIK, hypothyroid shouldn't cause you to bleed like that. It could be an other hormonal problem, or even a case of anemia. Did your doctor do more tests to find out WHY you are bleeding like that? Did he do a PAP ect? Your health really needs to be looked into. If the doctor you are seeing refuses to do it, see someone else. Healthy thoughts for you.
