I want to start working out so i'll feel better about myself and less guilty about being lazy. I'm not really overweight, but I would like to be more toned and maybe lose a little bit of weight too. I have some rudimentary exercise equipment at home, but not really enough for a complete workout. I'm not very athletic and I've never done many 'sports'. I have free access to a gym on campus but I'm really afraid to just go in. I don't really fit in in that sort of environment but I would like to 'suck it up' and just make myself go. Any advice for me? When are gyms less crowded? I wouldn't feel as anxious if there weren't many people there. Thanks in advance for any advice. -R
1. get into the gym just get in there, lose the ego. everyone at one point was a beginner. don't be afraid to ask for help, tips, spots. the gym i go to is usually empty when most people are working. at school, the gym was empty when most where in classes - early morning/late evening had sport team lifting, so it was busy at those times. just scope the place out a few times a week and see when a good time for you. 2. train your mind what i mean by that is read and read more. if you work out your body, you need to work your mind - know what you are doing. read how to make a program for yourself, read what exercises will yield results, read about nutrition - then implement it in the gym 3. nutrition you have to eat healthy to get the best results 4. goals construct some goals. write them down. you're only goal shouldn't be to be more toned. ----- http://www.t-nation.com/index.do has a lot of great articles. http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/index.html has lots of info http://www.uwlax.edu/strengthcenter/videos/video_index.htm has videos of lots of lifts http://www.rosstraining.com has a lot of info - great forum too now with those links, dont' just read and read and read and not workout. like i said you need to read, but you still need to workout. so don't paralyze yourself by analysis - just get your ass into gear and start working out.
i've been to a gym twice now. (yay me!) i was totally scared to go, but i made an appointment with the gym's personal trainer and she totally talked me thru everything, even gave me pointers on gym ettiquette. it's nowhere near as scary now that i know how the machines work, what i'm supposed to do, etc. the personal trainer made up an exercise program for me to follow, it was totally worth the money i spent on meeting with her. people always fear the unknown, it's human nature. ps, maybe talk a friend into going with you
