My 3 month old beagle, Darwin, is driving me nuts!!! He howls and barks and yips all the time and won't stop unless he is sitting on my lap. I love my puppy so much, he is a sweet dog, but I am going to have a baby any day now, and i am worried that he will keep the baby awake, and also get very jeolous. He is great with my 4 year old, but he is just so loud. Anyone have any tips on how to train him to stop all the yelping?
Get a crate for him first of all, if you don't have one already and make sure he know that is his safe home. Take him to obedience classes or get some books from the library. I don't mean to sound harsh, but didn't you know that beagles howl before you got him? And he is only 3 months old, did you really think that puppies came completely trained? It could take up to 2 years to properly train a dog. You probably should have waited until after your baby was born, but there is nothing you can do about that now. Good Luck. And please if you can't take care of him, try to find him a home rather than send him packing to a shelter.
Good advice. Beagles are vocal dogs, and as puppies they're worse. It's one of those things you have to ride out in order to enjoy your dog when it's older.
That's almost like asking if we have any tips on getting your baby to stop crying. It's a puppy; they cry and yipe and there's no quick fix. It needs your love, attention and most importantly your time and if you're going to be having a baby soon you will not have time for the puppy, which is very unfair to everyone involved. Logically I would find a better living situation for your puppy.
Then you shouldnt have gotten a pet if you were an irresponsible, whiny twit. If you cant handle a crying puppy, *he'll get over it, hes 3 effing months old, lady*... then how on earth do you expect to handle a baby crying, constantly? Yeah, everyone has a petsmart nearby. Take a few minutes out of your precious day and have him trained. Crazy, i know. Yelling at him wont help. Discouraging, no. You have to reward him when he does not bark. Several methods of teaching him this.
Well I don't know that this kind of response was necessary. You could have told her this without being rude about it. Other than that, juggalettejen, the advice above is pretty right on. You need to train your puppy not to bark. Rewarding for good behavior and not yelling when he's yelping or barking or lets face it HOWLING. Easier said than done with a beagle, they are just vocal dogs, that's how they are. But another thing with beagles is that they are VERY inteligent and WANT to be trained. All dogs in general are just begging to make you happy. You just have to teach them how.
Here, I just got a puppy too, but she is a year and crate/potty trained already, plus I don't work so we go to obedience classes and the dog park as often as possible. Anyway, I was searching online and I found this group. It has some articles on training a puppy. You can't just respond to his posts as I have tried, but you can read what he has to say. http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/positivepetzine/ Personally, I want my dog to bark. She is supposed to protect me. I want to know if she hears something that I can't hear so I can go investigate and make sure everything is ok. This guy talks about getting your dog not to bark when someone is at the door, but that is when I want my dog to bark. Oh well, to each his own. Don't worry I'm not training my baby to be mean or anything, just a dog with a big bark to scare off the bad guys. She's really a sweetheart and would probably only lick someone to death.
