Guinness, Heineken, Becks not in the top 100?

Would that be because they're not actually beers?

Guinness, as good as it is, is a stout - and to many probably the only stout there is, although I do rate Murphys and sometimes even Beamish.

Heineken and Becks are Lagers. And there's a time and place for a good lager (if you can find one), but it's not at a beer festival.

    Never heard of Weihenstephen.

I expect Fullers London Pride, Timothy Taylor's Landlord and Theakston's Old Perculiar were all in there somewhere.

I very much doubt Courage Director's would be.

Well, beers like Heineken and Beck's are often considered "good beers" by novice beer drinkers who don't really know what's out there.

Part of the appeal can be attributed to the multi-million dollar marketing campaigns these beers have. And most Americans assume that if doesn't come from the US, then it must be good, even though Beck's and Heineken are only very simple lager beers that strongly pale in comparison to most other foreign, non-lager beers which are far better, yet don't have the same mega-marketing campaigns as Heineken and Beck's.

The only good things that can be said about Heineken and Beck's is that they're better than American lagers, which they are. They're good beers for a hot summer day when refreshment comes before taste. But it's nothing I'd like to sit in front of the fireplace drinking on a cold winter's night.

By European beer standards, Heineken and Beck's are pretty crappy beers. They're drinkable, but they're far from connaisseur beers. They're pretty much simple, standard lager beers with not much to them.

You can say what you like about how good Heineken and Becks are, but they're not actually beers. They're lagers. There's a difference.

    Lager IS beer.

There are two PRIMARY types of beer: ales and lagers. Ales use top-fermenting yeast and ferment at warm temperatures, while lagers use bottom-fermenting yeast and ferment at cold temperatures.

Under these two types of beer are hundreds of individual styles. Lager is simply the generic term for any bottom-fermented beer, though is usually used in reference to mainstream, accessible, light-bodied beers that are also light in color and taste.

German beers like bocks and doppelbocks are also considered lagers, but are darker and often richer because they use dark, roasted malts.

You are not incorrect, however when you're talking about Beers in the traditional sense, you mean Bitter and Ale and possibly Mild as well. A beer festival looks at bitters and ales, unless it's a continental one, for example Belgium or the Czech Republic where Lager is king. And by the way, there aren't just two types - you forgot Stout for one thing.

But if you go into a pub and ask "what beers have you got" they won't bother to mention the lagers - they know that you mean "which traditional ales/bitters etc. have you got?" No-one's going to go and ask whether or not a pub serves lager. Although some places test my patience by offering me Worthingtons as beer. Generally I do buy it though because they only other stuff they've got is lager and possible a cider. No stout even!

Bitters and milds fall under the ale category.

Um, no... Ale is king in Belgium. Lager is king in the Czech Republic.

And since when are Belgium and the Czech Republic continents?

Wrong - stouts fall under the ale category. Stouts are simply top-fermenting ale beers, using top fermenting yeasts and dark, roasted malts.

How come all the most famous belgian drinks are lagers then? I had to look bloody hard to find any bitters there whilst the range of lager available was phenomenal.

oh and I never said Belgium and the Czech Republic are continents, they're ON THE CONTINENT, ie continental.

You can class Bitter and Mild as Ales if you like, but Stout and Ale are as different as Ale and Lager. They may have a lot in common with regards to the brewing process but the end result is something altogether different.

You're dead wrong about lagers being the most famous beers in Belgium.

First of all, bitters are English in origin, so you're not going to find any in Belgium.

And the only really popular Belgian lagers are Stella Artois and Pax. These are dwarfed by Belgian ales such as Chimay, Westmalle, Duvel, Crosendonk, Koningshoen, La chouffe, and many more.

Belgian lager isn't much different from the lagers in the other Europen countries. Lagers are generally very simple beers, which is contradictory to the bulk of which comes from Belgium.

Again - the two primary TYPES (not styles) of beer are ales and lagers, which are based around the type of yeast that is used. The non-yeast ingredients account for the beer's STYLE. Stouts fall under the general category of ales, seeing as they're made with top-fermenting yeast.

Simply put, stouts are full-bodied, top-fermenting ale beers which use dark, roasted malts, which are responsible for both the beer's color and taste.

Those aren't bitters, they're dark coloured lagers - at least that's what they taste like to me.

And nobody drinks Stella in Belgium. It's mainly Maes (which isn't bad) from what I could tell when I was over there a couple of summers ago.

What beer are you referring to?

Right, because most of them are drinking the various Belgian ales; be them tripels, quadrupels, saisons, abbey goldens, or Flemish red ales.

What is it with everyone drinking this fizzy yellow lager piss? It hardly has any flavour!

Some people just don't know they're born! ;)
