Does anyone here make it a point to support Canadian industry? Shop at Canadian stores? Buy materials made in Canada? I'm talking about the times when you've a choice btwn shopping at an American chain vs Canadian, or buying something made in China vs made here... Would you be willing to spend the extra $$ on Canadian shwag or does it matter? Just wondering!

I find myself in different moods... Sometimes I make it a point to shop Canadian as much as I can, sometimes I don't pay attention.

i try to shop locally whenever possible. usually try to buy island grown food, local is fresher, tastes better, spends less $ on fossil fuels to get it here, supports local economy, etc....

i cringe whenever i buy something made in china, cause i know they buy up our resources on the cheap, process them and then sell them back to us. the whole system is insane, but i'm sure that there are lots of items stamped "made in china" in my home. :(

I try my best to buy Canadian, and I do fork out the extra dollar for something that I know was not made in a sweatshop.

The worst thing though, is that I love bananas - and guess where every banana comes from, eh?

I've tried to find bananas that are grown in Europe, and I've done some minor investigating, but have come to a dead end into that option. Ugh. I believe Adam Smith's invisible hand is giving me the finger.

apples are in season here right now, it's amazing how many different kinds of apples we have available to us! check out your local market, you'll probably find something that strikes your fancy

I make a point of shopping at canadain stores and chains. also check where the product is from even on food. I'll buy canadian tuna instead of other stuff even if it is more expensive...

the only real exception to that is if I'm in a bind or really pissed off and then I'll just buy the first thing i find

    not anymore.

I despise crappy tire so I'll go to Home Depot for anything "hardware" wise.
I also will go to wal-mart over zellers.

and I don't see the point spending more money just because it says "made in Canada" on it.

The point would be to keep money in the Canadian market, and not paying a foreign company, when you could be supporting a local / canadian company.

I buy local, but I don't go out of my way to do so.

that's great! the whole point of buying local is to _not_ go out of your way.

for example, i live in a smallish community. alot of pple i know go out of town to bigger centers with big malls to shop. i stay here to shop. it's easier, saves time, saves money, saves fuel, and keeps my money at home in my community, supporting the local economy

    ps, zellers sucks ass

I drink Alexander Keith's and smoke BC bud so I guess I am supporting Canadian industry in my own way.
But to answer your question, although I am in favour of supporting Canadian companies and brands whenever possible, it doesn't affect my spending decisions. That's mostly because I'm a student and am mostly concerned with saving as much as I can.

I drink lots of Canadian beer, some of it made right here in Winnipeg (Fort Garry Breweries) so it only has to travel maybe 20 miles to get in my stomach :)
