I was up on Hawthorne Ave. today and saw some hippies playing drums and maracas there and someone walked by and shouted, "The 60s are over! Get a clue!" This guy needs to get a clue. Being a hippie isn't about fitting in; far from it. It's about not giving in to the pressure to conform. So the hippies are a product of the 60s. So there aren't as many of them around as there once were. So what's your point? There were many hippies in the 60s who were not really tried and true. Once the Vietnam War ended they rejoined the establishment. Those who embraced the hippie life once it was no longer fashionably unfashionable were and are the real hippies.
it all died when jefferson starship did "We built this city". When I hear the song I get pissed off and get spirled into a bad mood for the rest of the day.
drums have existed since the moment one of our ancestors noticed a twack when a stick hit something, or perhaps a hand. It's prehistory. Gathering to drum is probably an hour younger. Hoping to change things is also about that old...so ...fad?
cavemen were long haired all natural hippies too hippies have always existed & always wil, they just didnt have a label "hippie" untill the 60's movement
The decade may be over, but the ideas will never die. Thing is, society is fickle. Once something is out of fashion, instantly anyone who still likes it is demonised in an attempt to kill it (witch they fail miseribly at as we see today). A good example of this are in the young (No offence, I'm 15, it affects me aswell). Look at a 'Preppy' (or if your in the UK, a 'chav' will do). Think was is fashionible now, within two weeks, that would have changed to something else, and those people who previously liked that fad would instantatiniously deny it ever was cool!!!
I know exactly what you mean. I've heard people say the EXACT SAME THING....and I have thought "and you're point is?" the 60's are over.. so what?
man the 60's. i wish i coulda been this age back then. such great music. it pains me. i cant stand the shit today.
i know what you mean. but this reality we live in is a harsh one. i guess all we can do is work hard to create a better one. but its tough being surrounded by people living in a false reality.
Yah. It's always been harsh though. And honestly, I guess what I was trying to say is... times change. Itll never be like the 60's exactly again but if you do things in your own way it could be diff. and better.... You dont think there were people living in a false reality then?
it really gets on my nerves when people say that stuff. when they say something about a hippie that is so stupid and untrue and stereotypical. like the other day, some kid in my english class was like "are you a hippy?" and i was like "who wants to know?" and he said something along the lines of "i know you're not, but some kid said you were. but you're not stinky or dirty, so i guess you're not" i was like "umm...ok" but that's so retarded. i get that a lot too. random kids at school come up and ask me if i'm a hippie. if i say yes they tell me that i'm not because i don't dress like one and i don't do drugs and shit. *sigh* i wish people wouldn't be so stereotypical.
Well, I have a story to tell... Every friday afternoon, I go into the city centre. And for....ohhhh...3 weeks, some random chavs pass me and say 'what the fuck?', even though they have passed me for the last three weeks!!! The thing is, even the most closed minded people can accept the basics, left and right wing, black and white, gay or straight....ect, ect, But not people like hippies. it pisses me off
I'm 26, and I still can't help but feel the same way. It's like "what did I do wrong in my past life that I would be sent to this time??" Ill get over it for a while, and then Ill hear a great song, and boom... I make fun of people who love the 80s. I tell them "its over", but at the same time Im wishing for the 60s to somehow happen again. But the 80s did suck. No need to try and figure it out again.
you are not dodging the draft yet, so sems to me it's easier with the Army by Halliburton. I have dear friends who are of that part of that generation (10-20 years older than I ) and they say its all about remembering WHY they did what they did not the particulars or WHAT. (or the clothes they wore) Keep the consciousness pried open and some people WILL slip through.
