    Who loves Tom? :)

I think he's amazing. Just his whole career has been brilliant really, lyrics alone are great. But he's pretty experimental too, there's all kinds of strange sounds and instruments used.

What would be your favourite album?

Has to be 1983's "Swordfishtrombones" for me.

    Rattle Big Black Bones

    in the Danger zone
    there's a rumblin' groan
    down below
    there's a big dark town
    it's a place I've found
    there's a world going on
    UNDERGROUND
    they're alive, they're awake
while the rest of the world is asleep
    below the mine shaft roads
    it will all unfold
    there's a world going on
    UNDERGROUND
    all the roots hang down
    swing from town to town
    they are marching around
    down under your boots
    all the trucks unload
    beyond the gopher holes
    there's a world going on
    UNDERGROUND

    ("Underground" - Swordfishtrombones)

    I love Tom Waits.

Swordfishtrombones is an amazing album but my favorite tracks would have to be Tom Traubert's Blues (Four Sheets To The Wind In Copenhagen) off Small Change and The Briar And The Rose off Black Rider.

    Rights! :)

"Small Change" is pretty excellent too. I've never heard "Black Rider", but my housemate has the lot so I'll give that a spin tonight.

    all my friends are married
every Tom and Dick and Harry
    you must be strong
    to go it alone
    here's to the bachelors
    and the bowery bums
and those who feel that they're the ones
who are better off without a wife

I like to sleep until the crack of noon
    midnight howlin' at the moon
goin' out when I wanto, comin' home when I please
I don't have to ask permission
if I want to go out fishing
and I never have to ask for the keys

    never been no Valentino
had a girl who lived in Reno
left me for a trumpet player
    didn't get me down
    he was wanted for assault
though he said it weren't his fault
well the coppers rode him right
    out of town

    selfish about my privacy
as long as I can be with me
we get along so well I can't even believe it
I love to chew the fat with folks
and listen to all your dirty jokes
I'm so thankful for these friends
    I do receive

("Better Off Without a Wife" - Nighthawke's at the Diner, 1975)

He has a pretty famous song called "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You" - Is that the one you're thinking of? It was on his debut actually, "Closing Time". Good album to start with ;)
