we are thinking about rescuing a dog from the shelters. We know we want an older, not quite senior, animal but we also would like a chill, lazy-ish animal who will still enjoy walks. Mid sized, female preferred (I have been accidentally bitten a few times, all by males. I'm taking that as a hint). Will get somewhat spoiled. Needs to be able to deal with an occasional pet sitter. willing to consider service trained dogs that didn't make it, although looking for older than that. anyone know of a good Web site for selecting a breed/ mix?
I won't try to recommend a breed for your circumstances, but I will say that almost every breed has a rescue site on the Internet. These are usually excellent sources for more mature animals, but use common sense in selecting both the breed and the source. Take your time and do your research carefully before selecting, and you should have good luck. I will make a couple of generalizations... keep in mind what the breed was developed for, as the dog will tend to behave as it was bred to. Shepherds will want to herd, etc etc. When in doubt, go back to their origins and that should give you a handle on what you can expect, plus your rescue outfits will often give personality descriptions of the dog if they have one. Good luck.
thanks, but I'm really in the mutt market. Plenty folks want pure breed. I'm looking for some fill in the blank and make a reccomendation sort of thing...s a starting point only.
To be honest I'd just visit the shelters and see who you connect with. Worked for us with our animals
I've been on petfinder...for an article... why don't I think to use the same flipping resources for myself? (slaps forehead) actually, is there such a site as a dog personality trait listing???
I absolutely adore people who adopt from shelters!!! If I could, I would adopt every last one and love em all but thats not really possible. I remember watching Animal planet and learning about celldogs. These dogs stay with inmates, who train them, and are given a time limit to be adopted out before being euthanized. Often times its the labs who are the last to be adopted because they were in such abundance and everybody wants a dog that looks a bit different. Also, there are soooo many greyhounds( ok not really a med size dogs but they are the sweetest things EVER) that need to be adopted out. I'm sure you can just google greyhound+adopting and find a webiste. Def. check out your local humane society. Hope you find a friend!
Yup, petfinder is where I send people all the time. Dunno if you're up for a teensy bit of a challenge, but I know that last time I was down there CWWC was looking for people to adopt out a couple wolf hybrids as well as several other mid to large-ish size dogs. Their website is http://www.wolfeducation.org/ and their phone number is on there if you wanted to give them a call love, mom
