i was hoping that all of the protests on october 5th would finally stur up some media coverage. but just like usual the mass media disappointed me again. there is pretty substancial evidence that georgey is doing a pretty awful job down at the white house. who know what it will take to get some media coverage on these protests. the majority of america has no idea that there were over 200 protests on october 5th. i don't know what else to say. we need more action...
Well, Pacifica covered the demonstrations here in Houston, but that was about it. That was about it, though. That's to be expected. It really is too bad, but the mainstream media doesn't want anybody to get any ideas about protesting the government. It might catch on.
They weren't covered at all on the tv coverage in California. Which is sad. But don't give up. Your generation can make a difference. The youth the main consumer unit in this nation, have to keep it up. They'll try to tell you what you think doesn't make a difference, but it does. We faced this in the sixties and seventies, but we stood strong and continued the good fight, and eventually they had to face the reality, that what we thought mattered. Here in California we face the Governator, he has the recognition of name and media recognition, but he may not be what's best for the citizens of our state. He's backed by the republican money bags. Youth is our future, and you have to have the strength of your convictions, not bow out because media tells you what you have to say is unimportant. You are important, you spend more money than the old farts and you make style and progress for this nation.
I was at the LA protest and while there were media photogs and cameramen everywhere during the demo, the published coverage was minimal. And while the demonstration seemed well organized and focused, the turn out was poor. I've read claims of 2,500 people for the LA protest but I am sure that the number was closer to 700 (no way over 1,000). That brings up the problem of either egos or a lack of sense. The World Can't Wait had its event on Oct 5 while the ANSWER folks have theirs on Oct 28. While a single coordinated event would be better, two protests could work if they supported each other. But they not only did not work together, they refused to even mention each other on their websites. I've talked to several people about this and not one of them knew about both events. Many knew about the Answer Oct 28 event while some knew about the WCW Oct 5th protest. But NO ONE knew about both and that is just stupid! To the people in charge of these events- why won't you work together with other groups? Or at least help publicize the other's event?
yeah i had no idea about the ANSWER protests, i had only heard about the World Cant Wait one on october 5th. we really do need to get all our efforts organized into one thing to get it off the ground in a productive fashion
Hey, I haven't even heard of any protest happening anywhere...although I have been looking for somewhere to do my part. I'm a member of the WRL (war resisters league) and I haven't heard anything about them organizing anytime in the future...maybe I just missed it. If you guys could let me know of somewhere to check up on different protest that would be great. My emails gbpackerfan1122@gmail.com if anyone feels like droping me an email Peace and love, Al
It's sad with the internet today that you guys can't come together and protest in mass, we did it in the sixties without the internet. The election is only a month away, you folks have to get it together. I would think internet access would make it so much easier.
i would think that using the internet would make things easier too. i don't know why it isn't. maybe as a whole, this generation is just too self interested to do something on a mass scale. but really i think the problem is no real leader. the 60s had Lennon how can you compete with that?
John Lennon wasn't our leader, there were many and most were never famous. We followed poets, journalists, teachers...we never had one leader and you don't need that either, you just need to listen and respond. John was part of the movement, not a leader and that's why we loved him. It was a movement where none sought leadership or status, we sought a common goal peace.
P E A C E is what it's all about. Not who organizes it or who takes credit. It's about saving the lives of the civilians being killed, and the GIs that think by following orders they are making things better. Their job is to follow orders no matter what. Our job is to question whether or not the violence is necessary. Are you doing your job?
Sorry for the multipleposts, but I have to say this. If you appoint leaders you outline who can be bought and sold. Is that what you want to do? It is better to gather together around a common goal and not declare any leader or organization as defining your goal. That way the marketers can't target your group or leaders. Your opposition has to address your questions and the facts rather than buy out your campaign.
by saying john was a leader i didn't mean that he was a dictator. just someone who people looked up to. for inspiration or for whatever else. i know that most leaders are bad and become corrupt and shit but we just need someone that is willing to step up and do something. hopefully it will be everyone at once so we are all leaders
OK, here's a link for the upcoming Oct 28th protests: http://answer.pephost.org/site/PageServer?pagename=ANS_homepage This event is not set up like the Oct 5th World Can't WAit Protest where every little town had its own event. The Oct 28th ANSWER protest is organized around a half dozen major events in the usual big cities; but I think they are rolling out some more local events for you rural types. Check it out and get involved. I can tell you that the Oct 5th event was more fun than I've had in quite a while.
I know you weren't saying that, but your generation tends to buy into marketing and other strategies. It doesn't have to be that way, you can "come together". John would like that.
VERY TRUE..all people care about in our generation is legalizing smoke, getting drunk and going to the gym (couldn't think of a third thing..lol) We need to get off our asses and work! Yeah ok a few of us do but not enough. I tried to organize a WRL at my campus and not only did the dean shut down my efforts (go figure, in fl it's all red, and not the good red, down here) but the flyers, cards, and announcments went unnoticed. At our first meeting one person showed up to eat the pizza then left...no one cares in our generation. I've asked my parents what they did and they just said it kinda fell together, people really cared. Lennon might not have been a leader but he sure as hell was an infulence on a lot of people (and still is). He was not a leader but possibly a role model? We need someone to look towards, to inspire our generation to get up and get active! I don't know who, we don't even have Jerry to lead the way. I tried to lead, failed, and I'm trying again....it's going to take a grass roots movement (and no not the band...which is very good by the way ). I feel lost and hopeless, probally like many of you do (or did in the 60's), but I stand up and keep fighting. Our generation has a habit of trying once and when they fail quitting. The 60's folk we're devoted to the cause, they beleived in it...no like most of our generation who do it because they think it's the in thing to do. Maybe we need to look at how they did it back in the day eh? Take some pointers from them, at least they got noticed..got their message heard. It might feel like we are down on our luck, or moving slowly but the counter culture of the 60's didn't sprout overnight either. Maybe we are the ones to spark this revolution. Remember "Don't sit on the couch and bitch. Start a revolution!: It's going to take someone to get the ball rolling, why not us? Start getting out there and protesting on the streets, try holding signs saying "Honk if your against the War" even if your the only asshole standing on that street. Do it every week at the same time, at the same spot..sooner or later somebody will show up and give thier support. I could keep ranting, and sorry btw, but it just kills me to see our generation looking on the internet for events..sure I asked for sites that post protests...but nothing is stoping us from staring one ourselves.... Peace, love, and keep on truckin', Al
Well in the sixties we were under a draft anyone could be sent over to die. You guys have a choice. And many of you choose not to, and that's fine, in fact I support your choice. But right now we look at the soldiers as saints, they aren't they are young people who for one reason or another chose to join up. Just because they are in uniform doesn't make their mistakes or illegal actions above scrutiny. Because we all were eligible for the draft, I think we all sought an end to the war. Now only the poor and the gullible are fighting. It's hard to find a united front. Good luck! Rich families aren't losing their kids.
rich families aren't losing their kids but they are the families that are supporting this dumb war. i completely agree with you Donvito. i always try and stur up a bit of controversy where ever i go. i like confronting people on certain issues. but part of my generations problem is the fact that a lot of us are for whatever reason conservative. damn reagan and his dumb moral majority bullshit. i for one can't understand why any young person would be for the war or any of the views that conservatives usually have. it just doesn't make sense. somethings gotta give
I think it's our schools. Many kids now a days are going to private schools/colleges where the conservative message is plowed into thier brain every day because many parents are afraid to put thier kids in public schools. I went to Old Trail School, a pretty conservative school, and everyday was taught "christian" morals and was surrounded by a strong sense of conservativism. It's just what kids are taught in schools, they don't really get the other side presented to them in a positive manner. Plus the liberal media is usually low funded and those that control the media are mainly conservative or atleast paid enough by our government to appear conservative. It's just that our message is not getting out there....
Donvito, about your theory that conservative schools produce conservative people. Aren't you yourself evidence that your theory is wrong?
