    Keep or chuck?

Whilst it may help to refrain some people from offending minorities, it also seems to give others an excuse to point at people and yell "Racist!".

Are people becoming pathetic? Or are these self-appointed social police on the right track?

Update- I refrained from giving my personal opinion for a while because I wanted to see what everyone thought first, ie. didn't want a "I agree"/"I disagree" type-thread. But now I wouldn't mind putting my ideas up for debate, so here they are ;)

too much of a good thing i reckon... people liked what they saw when someone said, "hey, that's kinda mean" when a predominantly white company refused to employ a coloured person. well that's fair enough, that's a stupid reason not to employ someone! but now we're not even allowed to say that the person is coloured.

pointing out a difference that has no emotional weighting, and pointing out a difference that does, and acting negatively upon it, are entirely different things. i think the government decided to stop letting people work out the difference for themselves because too many people were getting it wrong.

isn't this something that is wrong with us though? where have common sense and basic principles gone, that the government has to babysit us and regulate our SPEECH? we do need to be babied though, the law sits where manners used to be.

political correctness is overkill however. in the uk a job advertisement got a company into trouble because it asked for a person with a 'cheerful disposition', and this was discriminating against people of a 'non-cheerful disposition'... you see it just gets a little ridiculous.

if people's egos shrunk, and manners grew, then political correctness would be shoved where it belongs. and it would reside forevermore alongside all the other unnatural schemes attempting to replace the much more natural scheme of just respecting each other.

I do think we should see our fellow humans as equals. We hippies are pretty good at that, but we are also individuals. We're all different, and if we're affraid to acknowledge that some of us are men and others women, or if we ignore our racial or ethnic differences, we're going to miss out on the richness of the world.

Maybe political correctness is just another attempt to get the people of the world to live together peacefully. It seeks to remove all the things that make us different, so we'll have nothing to fight about anymore. I doubt that we can or should ignore our differences. I think we'll have to look further to find the answer to racism, sexism, ageism, classism.
Someday the races will meld into one, and we'll have to hate eachother for some other reason.

What is political correctness? I think since Bush there is no such thing. Anyone who wears a turban is now cannon fodder.

I always say words like "bitches", "wenches", "chicks", and "broads" when referring to my fellow females. Some get all pissy.

I promptly tell them to go take a Midola and STFU. :p

    hahaha true

and anyway... 'correct' in who's opinion? surely...'correct' should be, 'correct according to'

    .
    .
    .

on another note, i think we will have 3 stages in history:

    1. people using differences as insults
    2. people ignoring differences altogether (where we are now)
    3. people celebrating differences

and THEN, because history always repeats itself, some idiot will start using differences as an insult again...and we'll be back to square 1.

(btw apparantly the term 'square 1' is from when soccer games were commentated on the radio, and they divided the pitch into squares in order to tell viewers where the ball was. square 1 was the starting point. hehe thought that was pretty interesting :))

    Words that shouldn't be used:
    -******
    -towelhead
    -tarbaby
    -negro (non-spanish usage)
    -spic
    -chink

    Words that are ok:
    -midget
    -cracker
    -honkey

Most things, like "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas", or "mailperson" instead of "mailman", are stupid. Political correctness is a stupid waste of time, and causes more rifts than its worth.
