i know this doesn't quite fit in this forum...couldn't find a better place for it....i hope i get a couple of responses....

well, my bf and i have been living together for a few years, want to have kids soon, and have decided to go through with the "marriage formaliy". we feel the only reason to get married is for the tax break, the health insurance, etc...it makes life easy. also, my wonderful parents are psyched to throw a wedding for their only daughter....(off topic, lol)

so ANYWAY, he has decided that i need a somewhat traditional engagement ring, before we make the announcement to the masses and book a date. i could honestly care less. the only jewerly i EVER wear are the silver earrings that havn't been removed in months, and assorted hemp stuffs and stone pendants.

i've been looking, and all the engagement rings i see are hideous. also, there is no "his money" or "my money", so i will know how much of OUR money he spends (and it wont be much)...(my brother spent $6000 on his wife's engagement ring, and i think that scared the shit outa my bf! i told him if he buys me a $6000 ring, i'm dumping him!!!)

well, this being a hippie forum, i was hoping some of you could show me some of your rings, or rings that you've seen, etc, that aren't quite so tradional. i'm picturing a ring with some detailed metal work, (platinum or white gold) and a small diamond....any advice, photos, etc are appreciated!!

sorry for the looooong story, and thanks for your time!
    peace.

    Hey mama!
We got our wedding bands from Jewelry by Da'oud. i never wanted an engagement ring, so we just got the plain bands. We have the oak leaf pattern, i really like them and folks always comment on how unusal they are. The prices are pretty reasonable, relatively speaking.
You could also find something lovely at an antique shop, or even a thrift store if you don't care if the stone is genuine.
    Good luck!

My hubby got me a simple sapphire solitare in white gold. It's perfect.

***ok, don't laugh, I see a lot of well-priced stuff at jewelrytelevision.com, maybe something there will work?***

remind me why you need an engagement ring? If you don't want one, you shouldn't have to get one... i mean, its your ring, your finger, right?

I have to agree with Tree... hit up trift stores. Also try estate sales, and pawn shops.

thanks, tree! those rings are beautiful! i sent them an email for more info...did you order directly from them, or deal through a local jeweler? i can't wait to show them to my man! and you're right, the prices are semi reasonable!

(icedteaprincess, did you actually READ my post? i never said that i NEED one or that i don't necessarily want one.... what i said, is i could care less if i had one or not...just don't want a standard UGLY one...)

well, thanks for looking, everyone! i'd love some more suggestions!

    peace.

I did read your post... note the now underlined, italicized and underlined word. Was questioning why HE thinks YOU need a ring... especially since you don't think its it needed. I hate having jewlery rammed down my throat just to appease society and it's norms (am being totally serious and not ironic, FTR)

Was not, and am still not meaning to come of as aggressive if that is how you took my original message. Was just once in a simular situation. I wear jewlery in the same way you do.

But.. enough of that. I do seriously recommend hitting up some estate sale... a ring from the 1930's really isn't todays stylistic norm.

well, this is true, and "not the norm" IS exactly what i'm looking for....

i can totally relate to this...that's not really the case, although i can see how it would seem so. i think it's cute and romantic that he sees it necessary, and THAT is what will make me proud to wear it. we've been together forever, and have a great relationship, so my feeling is that i don't NEED a ring to prove anything. BUT, if he wants to get me one for his own reasons, then it won't kill me to wear one nice piece of jewerly, with so much meaning behind it.

also, did you check out the site that tree posted above? those rings are all available in white gold, and platinum too, and they are very cool!

    peace.

    Hey Lp!
We purchased directly from the artist. The rings are all made by one guy, Da'oaud Thompson. He does beautiful work and is very easy to deal with. We purchased our rings 6 years ago, and i still have his site bookmarked and recommend him to folks. :)
    Blessings,

Hey melonhead... so have you decided on a ring yet?
Your brother must be really loaded to have spent $6000 on an engagement ring-was/is she worth it?Just kidding, no offense meant!
I was browsing one jewelry forum and found this amazingly cute white gold ring with sapphires and diamonds-it looks expensive to me, but you can still have a look at it-here.
I love it, but I think it might be a wee bit more than what should be spent on an engagement ring... but nevertheless it never hurt to see and appreciate beautiful things in life, aint it? *wink*

I wear 2 simple gold bands with in-set sapphires and teeny little diamonds. I didn't choose either one and even though I wouldn't have chosen them, I like them. And I'm pretty sure they were not that expensive. We have never had much money. ;)
