Here's another view... A couple folks already posted that our ancestors were opportunistic when it came to eating meat. There is also a theory that one of our common ancestors took to eating meat because of environmental changes. The trees that we inhabited for a few million years were more dispersed...so we had to go looking for more food. This resulted in two evolutionary changes, our ability to walk upright and eat meat. Once we figured out there was plenty of food at ground level we spent more and more time there. The rise in our protein intake also contributed to the growth of our brains. Yeah...I was watching National Geographic channel again.
Bears are Omnivorous, they would not survive their hibernation period if all they ate was berries. They need the fat from fish etc
humans are meant to be carnivorous otherwise we wouldnt have the kind of teeth we do. you know which teeth im talking about.
there's more energy in meat and protein. and there's compounds we can't synthesise ourselves in plants that we need. we require heaps of energy to keep functioning, more than most animals. some things accumulate as you go up the food chain... low concentrations in a sinlge small animal but a large one that eats 10 of these will be packing a higher dose. however this can also be a problem when it comes to contaminants such as Hg.
