how long do seeds last? I've got some seeds from a strain that I absolutely loved, and in a few years... lets say 5, I would like to grow them. Will they last that long? Regardless, I'll probably still plant them anyways when the time comes.

Store the seeds in a small, clean, airtight container. Stow them in a dark place at an even, moderate, temperature - like a dresser drawer. They should be like new in five years!!! Just make sure that there is no excess moisture on the seeds or in the container when you put them away.

I dont agree. After 5 years you might get a 25% germination rate, but some should be good. I broke out some G13 cross seeds the other day, they were about 3 y/o and none came up. Other Early Pearl strain same age I got 3 out of 10

How well you protect the seeds for storage and the temperature extremes they're exposed to during storage will have a dramatic effect on viability as time goes by. I have found misplaced and unprotected seeds (just in a paper envelope) that were left in an outdoor shed for 3-5 years - germination rate was zero out of about 20, they got "baked"!
A freind of mine found some 20+ year old seeds that were tucked away in his belongings, kept indoors, but not protected completely (wrapped in paper and aluminum foil). He had results similar to your's, about 25-33%.
How did you store your seeds and what were the temperature conditions?

    Hey hey,

    My massive 3rd post :)

An opaque small container, insert a lil package of dessicant (like the little package that comes in a shoe box) and a refrigerator will help extend viability. They can be frozen for looong periods but once thawed they must be used.

Cool and dry is the goal.

    Good Luck!
    Bill

yeah we refridgerate all our seeds (not weed) at TAFE where i study and there are seeds from early 2000 that still germinate fine
