i posted this problem a few months ago, but didn't really get a lot of response, and i still don't have a rat, so i'm gonna try again. i've had pet rats before, but they all died quite a few years ago, and now i'm really missing their cute lil faces. the problem is, i live with my parents, and my mum is refusing to even consider giving me permission to buy one. i think its partly because i used to have a guinea-pig which really bored me (seriously got to be the dumbest animals on this planet), so i ignored her for a while then gave her away to some friends. don't get me wrong, i treated her alright, fed her and stuff, but i think my mum felt a bit guilty having this lonely guinea pig in the back garden. so fair enough, she has her reasons, but i've had loads of pets before and just cause i don't get on with guinea-pigs doesn't mean i'm gonna get bored of every animal i ever have. i nursed one of our cats, hand-feeding, washing etc for two weeks before he died, so i'm not irresponsible. anyway, now i've hopefully convinced you all that i'm not some harsh animal abuser, you got any ideas how i could persuade my mum to let me get some rats? we've got the cage and food and everything, i could easily just go buy one tommorow and bring it home, but seeing as i'm living in my parents house it's only fair to go by their rules, right? anyway, i've been wanting one for months, and i'm getting pretty desperate for some more animal company. i don't care how ridiculus or crazy your ideas are, just anything... please....
Well, maybe you could ask her for a compromise. If she lets you get a rat you will take the responsibilty of caring for it head on and if you dont then she is allowed to give it away and not allow you to have another one. If she just doesnt want any pets around.....well, yes, it's her home and she's your mother and you should respect that. Good luck....hopefully she'll give in. Maybe if you nag her long enough.......j/k........but that always worked with my mom when I was a kid.
i went through the same thing wiht my gerbils basically, just let them know that their YOUR animal, your gonna be feeding them, looking at them and after them, and caring for them, and that they dont even have to look at the damned thing or pay for him if they dont want, which brings up the topic of where you could put it, think of a GOOD place where they wouldnt see it at all or often. oh and dont just buy one rat, they get lonely very easy, and die VERY quickly when their lonely.
